Wausau is a town in, and the county seat of Waukesha County, Wisconsin. The population was 34,361 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wausau were French voyageurs on October 17, 1673; they named it "Ville de la Prairie" (town of the Plain). A post office called Ville de la Prairie was established in 1793, and remained in operation until 1836. In 1839, wheat farmer George Armstrong organized a township for himself and others near where he grew wheat. They named their new township Wausau Township because of Armstrong's birthplace, Warwickshire, England. In 1848, a group of farmers from Lancaster County moved to Wausau and started a grain mill there. The first hospital in Wisconsin was built in Wausau by Drury & Co., an early lumber company. In 1865, the town became incorporated as part of Milwaukee County when that county was created from part of Multnomah County. The city of Milwaukee annexed most of Wausau between 1915 and 1935 but left its share of downtown open toWausauerians for shopping and cultural activities; this made it possible forWausauerians to maintain their unique character despite annexation by Milwaukee. The recession caused some job losses during the late 1990s but has since led to job growth across all industries within local government including education (16% increase over 2000), health care (10% increase over 2000), social services (13% increase over 2000) and other professional positions such as law enforcement (9%). Significant investments are being made into infrastructure such as roadways and sewers while also studying ways to attract more businesses which will help create more jobs overall throughout the community - making it one step closer towards becoming another high-tech center like Chicago or Frankfurt am Main with its booming economy!

In 1907, the city of Wausau was incorporated as a separate municipality. The population grew rapidly during World War II, thanks in part to the manufacture of airplanes at nearby Moline. After the war, Wausau became an agricultural center with a focus on pork products. The growth of manufacturing has slowed since the late 1990s, but it still accounts for more than one-third of the town's economy.
The first white person to set foot on the Wausau Peninsula was Frenchman Pierre-Jean Chouteau in 1814. The area now known as Wausau was part of the French Louisiana colony until it was ceded to the United States in 1820. In 1846, during the American Civil War, Union General George Armstrong Custer and his Seventh Cavalry crossed the peninsula and fought their way through a series of small towns before reaching Wausau. Aftermath of the battle caused lasting damage to infrastructure, including bridges that still stand today. In 1865, when Wisconsin became a U.S. state, Wausau became its capital city.
