The merger forms what is now known as Michiganders Incorporated Municipality (). Wausau has experienced significant growth over recent decades due to its various industrial sectors; these have included heavy manufacturing (such as aluminum) during World War II and subsequent boom times following that period's end; light Manufacturing during the 1990s-2000s recession; and then again since 2000 when new development began surrounding downtown areas around First Avenue SE/NW (the "wedge"). Downtown also underwent significant renovation starting in 2006–2007 including reclamation of parts of Main Street NE between Third Avenue NW and Fourth Avenue NW which once served primarily as a parkway.; however much work still needs to be done before downtown is ready for human settlement again.: Today there are several different types of businesses operating within Downtown: Large companies such as Intel International have moved out throughout recent years but smaller businesses continue to operate with large footprints all around town.: The major industrial attractions remaining from earlier eras are still present but have been gradually gentrified over time into more modern uses.: Downtown area center contains several restaurants, bars/pubs/nightlife venues., libraries/museums/, antique stores/stores specialising in crafts., four churches:, three schools (2nd through 8th grades), an arena used by sports teams including ice hockey and lacrosse (), two hospitals:, one lakefront resort/, numerous art galleries/, four grocery stores/, six medical offices/.
