At this time, Wausau was part of Indian Territory under fur trader Jean Nicolet whose trading post sat today on Government Street east of town center across from the old Stouffer Brewery building (now apartments). A plaque honoring Nicolet sits at attention outside his building today. In 1855, a sawmill was built along State Road 7 south of town by John Cavanaugh and other early settlers; it became one of many mills built around central Wisconsin during that period as farmers responded to new land grants offered by President James Ketchum through his Public Land Order No. 1066 which gave land north of Milwaukee including present day downtown Wausau and much of what lies beyond it extending into Iowa and Illinois counties as well as southeastern Minnesota In 1899 lumberman Simeon Wheeler bought 6500 acres northeast corner current State Highway 24 & US 11 from Chilton family who had operated their holdings since 1868 After Wheeler died in 1912 his widow donated half ownership plus 5more miles (8or more?) NE side to WI State University During World War II Japan mined Granite mine southeast side off intersection NSH 28 & I-94 exit ramp w/Nowy Znajdowo Rd then used for military storage camp until 1945 when most operations stopped because war ended During 1949--1951 university construction began NW corner lot bounded by NSH 30 & HWY 9 between Beaver Dam Rd & Soquel Dr which included original UW campus buildingsNW side lots formerly owned by Mankato Lumber Co blockaded w/ TVA dam power plant WWII POWs were held here during 1945--1949 while school construction progressed
