Wausau, Wisconsin is a city in Wausau County,Wisconsin, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Mississippi River and is bordered by the towns of Menomonee Falls to the north, Racine to the east, New Berlin to the south, and Clinton to the west. Wausau is home to University of Wisconsin–Wausau and has a rich agricultural history dating back over 100 years. Today, Wausau remains an economic center for central Wisconsin with businesses such as Pfizer and Monsanto operating in downtown.
In the pre-Columbian era, American Indians used a variety of targets for hunting. some of these targets were made from sticks or other materials that could be hit with a bow and arrow, while others were simple animal carcasses. One Western Indian tribe, the Paiute, used an elaborate system of tree branches as gun targets. The target was erected in a paddock or open space near the hunting ground and shot at with bows and arrows. In 1847, Major John Cushing established an artillery battery at Fort Sill on Red River in Oklahoma Territory to use against Native Americans living in that region. The town of Wausau, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by Isaac Brockman. The town was named after General John Marshall Wausau who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1855, the town was renamed to Stevens Point and it remained that way until it merged with Green Bay in 1905. The history of the Stevens Point-Wausau merger is one of Commerce and Commerce: two towns were founded on opposite sides of a river, but within a few years they had become major economic powers in their respective regions. After merging, the new city became known as “the twin cities” because they had both grown up around the shipbuilding industry. Over time, Stevens Point began to outpace Wausau as an educational and cultural center while Wausau gradually lost its influence as a manufacturing center. Today, there are only a few remaining businesses from when Stevens Point and Wausau were both powerful economic engines.
In 1881, Wausau was the capital of the now-defunct Wisconsin Territory. The city became a town in 1892 and then a city in 1907. In 1913, it amalgamated with neighboring Stevens Point to form the present-day City of Wausau.
