Wausau, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Marathon County. The population was 8,828 as of the 2010 census. It lies at the junction of Interstate 94 and US Highway 41 south of Green Bay. The town's economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries. The local paper mill closed in 2004 but remains an important part of the community's economy; its products are used by many local businesses and schools. Wausau was founded in 1849 by David Langdon and his family as a stop on the stagecoach route between Green Bay and Milwaukee. The first settler to arrive in what is now Wausau was John Purdy who arrived in 1851 with his family from Illinois. In 1853, Samuel Chapman set up a farm on land that would become part of Wausau later that year. By 1870, there were over 100 settlers living in Wausau according to censuses taken by the United States Census Bureau . In 1886, JnoPurdy donated land to build what became known as "The Prairie" shopping center adjacent to his farm which served as the nucleus for much development around it over ensuing years including several blocks north becoming known collectively as "The Prairie". The center had two stories with five storefronts each with indoor/outdoor seating for 350 people maximum per day before closure due to fire hazard back in 1984 though reopened briefly under new ownership following other redevelopment going on near it Main Street circa 2013 before being vacated again (and remaining vacant until demolition) making this one such case where multiple uses have occurred consecutively within one space within an urban setting prior to displacement or abandonment). A post office called Wausau was established at this location on November 12, 1850, under authority granted by Act Of Congress . wisconsin@mail1 was first sent through this post office on December 10th 1850 . mail continued arriving everyday until May 15th 1861 when Union troops burned down old brick depot across street from post office while occupiers were evacuating after skirmish along river

Wausau is a city located in the northwestern Wisconsin region of the United States. The population was 24,681 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Wausau County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wausau were French traders and fur trappers who found Indian villages along the River Kawkaree on July 10, 1672. French explorer Jacques Marquette visited the area in 1679, and reached what is now Wausau on January 6, 1701. The first permanent settler in Wausau was Nicholas Bachelet who arrived from France on December 12, 1831. He founded a small trading post near present-day downtown Wausau with his brother Jean Baptiste Bachelet. A second Frenchman, Pierre Dorion established a fur trade post here on November 3, 1834 which became known as Du Pont Point after him. In 1863 German immigrant John Pohl founded an agricultural company that became J&P Kohlenberg & Co., one of America's earliest industrialists. This business operated until 1937 when it merged with American Tobacco Company to form British American Tobacco (BAT). In 1907 WI native Edward Coyle patented an improved way to make cheese which led to his company becoming North State Cheese Manufacturing Company (NSMCo). NSMCo operated a factory until 1984 when it merged with Litton Industries Incorporated to become Litton Brands Incorporated. In 1994 Litton Brands merged with United Parcel Service (UPS) to form UPS Incorporation Over time various members of local communities have had their Handsome businesses or Fields That Changed Our Lives located within or just outside town limits: First National Bank building still stands today as does Friends Burlingame store; former Jellico dairy building across from UW main campus still functioning - housing Dairy Queennow Old Milwaukee Brewing Co.; former Stouffer’s restaurant next door also still standing;and two other buildings – One north of Main Street south of Highway 54/Old Route 12 open for retail use as Bob Evans Pizza; current headquarters for Menominee County government are located just east of I-94 exit 176 off US Highway 41 Today many businesses are closed while others have relocated away due largely to global economic changes but some remain such as North State Cheese Manufacturing Company (NSMCo),DuPont Point Fur Trading Post(DVPTP),FriendshipBurlingameStore(FTS),Bob Evans Pizza(BEP),Stouffer'sRestaurantNext Door(STR),I-94Exit176 off US Highways 41
