The city of Wausau was founded in 1874 by James F. Baer and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the Wisconess River which bisects the city. The first post office in Wausau opened in 1875. In 1917, Wausau became a city with its own government and Mayor George Denny served continuously until his death in 1951. In that year, City Council adopted a resolution declaring January 1st as "James F. Baer Day."
