The name "Wausau" was given to the community by David Whitcomb in 1847 from what he called "The Wausa," which is an assigned tribal name for the Kickapoo people. Wausau has a humid continental climate (Köppen Climate Classification "Dfb"), meaning that it experiences warm-summer and cold-winter weather patterns similar to those found throughout most of North America. January through May are typically mild with highs in the mid-30s °F; June through September are hot and dry with lows around 20 °F or less; October through December are frigid but also slightly wetter than average due to rain or snowfall. Precipitation averages during these months amounts to about 60 inches (1,500 mm). January is precipitationiest month while April sees least precipitation. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Wausau has a severe Driftless Area Climate – abbreviated Dfc – which means that despite good soils for agriculture, this area does not experience significant wind or wave action typical of coastal climates so soil moisture availability is critical for crop production. Additionally, this climate classification results in very low sunshine hours per day (-6 hours), making it difficult for farmers to provide adequate sunlight exposure throughout the day on their crops; therefore, many fruits and vegetables cannot thrive here because they need light up all day long for photosynthesis to occur. This type of climate also leads to frequent tornadoes as winds whip exposed areas around towns and cities causing damage from strong gusts of air pressure waves

The city of Wausau, Wisconsin was founded in 1837 by German immigrants. The city became a railroad town and prospered during the late 1800s thanks to its location on the Milwaukee, Chicago and St. Paul Railroad. Wausau also became known for its cheese industry which continued until the early 21st century. In recent years, Wausau has experienced significant growth as a tourist destination due to its scenic views, cultural attractions and history.
When the first Europeans arrived in Wausau, they were greeted with open arms by the local natives. The village was founded on a small island in the river that later became known as the Manitowoc River. The first European settler in what is now Wausau was Nicholas Doerfer, who arrived in 1825. He built a log cabin on his farm and named it Pioneer Place. In 1836, John Horsfall settled down in what is now Wausau and started to grow corn. He also built a house and outbuildings on his property which are still standing today. In 1847, Augustus Griggs moved to Wausau from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and started to plant potatoes at his farmstead. He also named his farmstead after himself, Augustus Griggs Place. In 1865, Jens Jensen purchased land northwest of present-day Wausau from Augustus Griggs for $50 dollars. He then started to grows crops and name his Farmstead After Jensen which still stands today. In 1893, John Crouch bought some land south of present-day town from Aube Larson for $100 dollars and started to cultivate apples thereon until he sold it off in 1903 for over $1 million dollars! His fruit orchard still stands today as one of the largest apple orchards in North America! In 1911, Fredrick Olson began farming potatoes on land east of present-day town along the Manitowoc River until he sold it off for over $2 million dollars! His potato field remains an important commercial crop to this day! In 1916, Harry Petersen opened up a grocery store at 305 Main Street which soon became famous throughout the area due to its high quality food products! In 1924, Jerome Laughlin opened up another grocery store at 404 Main Street which continued becoming popular until it closed down circa 1965 due to economic difficulties! Today only traces remain of these stores located within walking distance of downtown Wausau!. The early years of post World War II saw dramatic changes for both the locals and our current community when many factories relocated all over Wisconsin during that time frame; including those located near downtown Wausau such as Ford Motor Company (now known as Harley Davidson) which operated their plant right next door across Market Street from what is now known as Topeka Brewing Co.. This had a significant impact on not just our economy but also our culture since so much manufacturing ceased operations leaving little opportunity development or job growth within our community overall creating instead an economic vacuum that required outside investment before any real progress could be made
