Wausau is a town in Wausau County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,191 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wausau County. The first white people to live in what is now Wausau were prospectors and farmers who came to the area after 1848 when gold was found in Iowa. In 1851, James Fenton established a post office here with six mail sacks per week. A wagon road led from this post office northwest to Green Bay and east to Kenosha. When that road was replaced by the current highway system, Fenton continued to serve as a stop on his route until his death in 1863. In 1875, John Davenport arrived from Illinois and founded the town of Davenport which he named for himself and his father-in-law Samuel Davenport Sr.. Davenport laid out a square block of land near present day downtown Wausau for an Indian trading post he called "Dakota." He also built some buildings here including a log courthouse which still stands today and a schoolhouse/civic center which was dedicated on April 4, 1886. In 1898, Dakota Native Americans killed two white men while hunting deer near modern day downtown Wausau; this event made local newspapers around the country discuss how Sioux Indians could behave so recklessly if they did not have treaty rights over this land. The town petitioned Congress for assistance in getting their land back but no action was taken until 1906 when President Theodore Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6164 which allowed American Indian tribes within Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) to sell or lease their lands back to settlers without compensation provided they met certain conditions such as being able to maintain law and order among their own people and not taking away tribal members' cultural treasures). In 1915 when it became apparent that World War I would cause major social changes throughout Europe, Wausau Mayor Harry Kessler gathered together about 25 citizens who had organized themselves into "The Committee To Protect Our City" or CotCPT for short (a term later used more generally referring to similar groups). Kessler suggested that city leaders establish committees throughout Germany focused on issues such as food production rationing during wartime shortages etc., but no action was taken until 1919 when Mayor Kessler formed another group known as "The Committee To Appear Neutral" or CANT for short which lobbied unsuccessfully against neutrality policies of the United States government during World War I. A total of 10 towns across America adopted resolutions supporting neutrality during World War I including Wausau with residents writing letters TO THE PRESIDENT urging him not too support warring nations despite popular sentiment within our community towards pacifism.Herbert Shepard: History of Local Activism Upon learning about these efforts by locals – many unknowns before – US Senator Robert La Follette set up an investigation into CotCPT hoping it might lead authorities closerTo identifying any subversive activity happening inside our small community overnight.
