Waupun, Wisconsin is a small town in the Ozaukee County of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Waupun is one of five towns in Racine County that are served by Racine Community Radio. The first settler in what would become Waupun was Amos Ward in 1839. He and his family were among the first to homestead in what would become Racine County. In 1847, John Hennings (a member of the Iowa Territorial Legislature) organized a group of men who purchased land east of present-day Waupun on which they built their homes and began farming. They named their new community after Samuel Prentice, an early settler from Maine who had come to Wisconsin during the 1840s as a trader with Peter Costigan and others on the Great Lakes region. In 1855, Isaac Hempstead opened a gristmill on West First Street in what became Waupun and it remains one of downtown's most famous businesses to this day; today it operates as a museum operated by Western New England University (WEU). By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Waupun and its surrounding rural areas; many families came from southern Ontario to work on farms around centralWisconsin during that period of great change for America. At about this time also, important settlers such as Levi Bloomquist (the father-in-law of abolitionist Frederick Douglass), Daniel Webster*, James Kapp* and other notable figures began arriving from Illinois through western Michigan Territory - key players at Racine's earliest days when much freight movement occurred along Lake Michigan’s north shoreline between Chicago & Detroit . In 1865, Isaac Hempstead donated land for a public school system which eventually became Racine High School;today’s Racine Community Radio station was founded here in 1964! In 1895, following passage of federal law known as “The Gilded Age Act” allowing women unrestricted voting rights – including propertyOwnership –Waupun became home to one millionth person when Alice Paul** arrived here aboard her ship "Pioneer" while charting waters off California coast - an event later immortalized by rock singer Bob Dylan*** . Waupun is a community in the town of Waupun, on the east side of the Milwaukee River. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is one of five towns in Racine County and one of twelve villages in Wisconsin. The first settler to arrive in what is now Waupun was Alexander Maxwell, who arrived in 1836. Waupun was platted as a village in 1853, but it did not become a town until 1907. The name "Waupun" comes from two local Dakota words meaning "a place where Standing Rock Sioux people were able to gather water." The first reference to this location occurs in 1795 when Nicholas Wiseman wrote: "At present there are several small streams near by which they can get their water supply." In 1836, Alexander Maxwell visited this area and noted that there were several large buffalo herds around the bend in the river. He also observed that there were numerous small creek systems nearby providing drinking water for residents and animals. In 1907, when Waupon became a town, it had 456 residents (an increase of 98 over its predecessor). Of these residents, 248 lived on Main Street which runs through downtown; 124 resided on Second Street which connected with First Street via an alley; and 54 lived on either side of what is now Park Drive (now state Route 10). The remainingResidents lived scattered among other neighborhoods within Waupun including those located along Park Drive (now state Route 10), Madison Avenue (now Elmwood Avenue), Third Avenue (now State Highway 34), Chestnut Street (now Walnut Road) and Cedar Lane (Now Butterfield Road). Waupun is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Waupun County. The population was 12,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Wisconsin metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waupun were French fur traders in 1638-39, and others from Canada in 1818 whenCaptain John Cushing explored that region for the United States government as part of its Indian Removal Policy. In 1846, George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh Cavalry through Waupun on their way to Fort Dearborn where they were to attack American forces besieging that fort. In 1854, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a school in Waupun without local taxation; it was opened by Reverend Hepsibah Morse on December 1, 1854. The first teacher was Mrs. Eliza Colburn who taught until her death on December 5th of that year at the age of 77 years old (the current high school). In 1861, Waupun School District #1 was organized with 22 schools under its jurisdiction; this number increased to 38 by 1870 when other towns within the district also joined it in adding schools; however these numbers do not reflect actual enrollment because most students went to larger towns within or outside of Waupun during those years (e.g., Janesville, Green Bay, Racine). The railroad arrived in 1865 when a group led by James Janklow built tracks from Menomonee Falls southeastward through Waupun and across South Dakota Territory into Minnesota Territory before entering Iowa Territory for delivery eastward; this route crossed near present day Unnao village before terminating near Battle Creek Junction northwest of Cedar Rapids just south of present day Burlington County Line which then became part of Iowa City Township #2 but continued northwesterly as Burlington County line ended at Old World Blvd./Milwaukee Rd./Waukee Rd./South Side Ave/Euclid Ave./ today’s I-94 exit 95A) In 1867 a similar group led by Samuel Morton built tracks northeastward from Menomonee Falls southwestward past present day Racine into Illinois Territory before terminating at La Crosse Junction northeast of Chicago along Lake Michigan shoreline). This route ran parallel to what is now US 42 between Menomonee Falls and Racine then curved northeasterly around La Crosse Harbor following Sturgeon River until reaching Chicago; it crossed near Present Day Lincoln Park today's Sherman Road bridge over Lake Michigan just south of Cicero Avenue - one mile northwest cornerof Halsted Street between State St/Michigan Ave and Dudley Place/today’s Eastern Market Place.) The first train service started operations on November 6th 1865 between Chicago & Racine viaMenomonee Falls Depot then continuing eastwards viaLa Crosse Depot arriving at Red Wing Depot later that same day adjacent topresentday Hammond Stadium/Red Wing High School.) A new depot – “Market House” – was built northwestof downtownWausun soon followed by another depot – “Dixon House” – southwestofthedowntown core becoming better known as “the Terminal House” due to its role as both place where passengers boarded trains coming into town from outlying villages as well as connections inside town for passengers leaving town.] The last train services departed Red Wing Depot on October 20th 1971.] On July 15th 1969 Amtrak added a station called "Station Square" located just west off Summit Road adjacenttothenew courthouse] On October 3rd 1970 Amtrak removed all passenger trains from White River Junction after departing thereon September 29th 1971.] On January 8th 1974 Amtrak added a station called "Green Bay" locatedjustnorthwestofthesouthsideofMilwaukeebranching discontinuing operations thereon March 14th 1975.] After two decades running concurrent with each other Amtrak discontinued operationat "Station Square" on October 3rd 1970 effective immediately].
