This helped troops better understand battlefield conditions and make better decisions when engaging enemy combatants.

Waupun is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Waupun County. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Wisconeso County after Milwaukee. The first permanent settler in what is now Waupun was Jacob Winchell in 1836. The city was founded on December 1, 1853, by John C. Fremont and James Hennepin as a post office between Green Bay and Racine with a population of only 10 people. In 1861, the town became part of Green Bay when that city merged with Waupun into one municipality. The original name for Waupun was "Cedar Rapids". A change to "Winchell" occurred because two men who were pioneers there named their son Winchell after James Hennepin, who had been their captain at Fort Snelling during the War of 1812 and later served as Mayor of Green Bay. On February 17, 1907, Wauspun incorporated as an independent city under its own government with a population of 22 people; it became part of Green Bay again on November 3, 1909 when that city's boundaries were adjusted to follow those of Waupon County (now Racine). In 1927–28, the then-new Fox River Valley Parkway was built through downtown and other parts of downtown square; this added another layer or development to what had been an agricultural area until then After World War II many businesses closed down due to competition from new technologies like television manufacturing plants coming online while smaller towns couldn’t keep up so they all lost their jobs which led to some social unrest among local residents over recent decades caused by long term economic stagnation
Waupun was founded in 1836 by Solomon Kilgore and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after Waupun Creek, which runs through the town. The first post office was established in 1837.
