In 1881, George Perkins opened the first optical store in Waupun. The store was located on the corner of State and Market Streets. In 1902, railroad magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated a building on the corner of State and Main Streets to house the optical store. The store became known as the Carnegie Eye House. In 1933, steel magnate Harold Ickes donated an addition to the building that housed a department for spectacles and sunglasses. In 1945, Waupun's city government acquired adjoining land for use as a downtown park. The city built a new courthouse onsite in 1957 and dedicated it as the Waupun Municipal Courthouse. In 1974, Waupun became part of Eight Mile County when it was formed from parts of Winnebago and Rock county.
Waupun is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,752. The name "Waupun" is derived from the Menominee word wapuno meaning "to water snake." The town was platted in 1837 by James Wofford and others as part of a large land grant to Isaac Parker. In 1839, Wofford sold most of his grant to John Fitch and David Goodrich for $2,500. A post office was established at Waupun in 1840, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1875. A sawmill and gristmill were built in Waupun between 1841 and 1850; they remain standing today. In 1861, construction began on the first store building in town; it now stands as a museum operated by the townsfolk. The first telephone service was available from Milwaukee in 1916. In 1865, Waupun became one of ten towns incorporated into Racine County under a new law designed to reduce township corruption. The county seat moved from Racine to Waupun during this time; it still resides there today (though its boundaries have changed). The centennial celebration for Town Lake came about as a result of an effort by then-Mayor Edwin Sauer to commemorate aspects of life within town limits that he felt were not well represented elsewhere within Racine County or by government agencies such as county Roads Department or Municipal Court properties housed within Racine County government jurisdiction only (the exceptions being Park Avenue Methodist Church which opened its doors on July 1st 1886). This effort resulted with several open houses throughout downtown areas which allowed residents access to historical records housed therein both before incorporation into Racine County as well as after annexation by neighboring Newton Township including physical evidence documenting aspects unique to early days when Town Lake served primarily recreational purposes more than commercial activities including but not limited To: - Development Of parkland extending along Main Street side immediately eastward beyond present day property line where First National Bank Building now stands - Construction Of grist millrace running parallel northeasterly axis approximately paralleling current site of former Three Rivers Credit Company building currently displaying two tiers Corinthian columns each tier surmounted by two Ionic capitals each capital topped with an elaborate flat cap these capitals having been removed circa 1925 installed on original bank building foundation which may be seen from Third Street sidewalk just southwest corner corner lot marked “3R” also visible remnants remainsOf late1930s Second City Hall addition located on northeast corner lot marked “N” original Oneida Theater structure located across Third Street adjacent First National Bank building Trimmed low rise gable roofed Classical Revival style structure presently used for storage space only Formerly knownAs: Old Dominion Theatre
