The history of guns and gun targets in Waupun, Wisconsin can be traced back to the early 1800s. One of the earliest firearms in this area was a muzzle loader called a “pumpkinGun”. This weapon was made from an old hunting rifle stock that had been cut down to size and then shaped into a cannon barrel. The barrel was then bored out to within 1/8 inch of the end and fitted with a shotgun choke. It was used as an artillery piece for target shooting. In 1855, General Anthony Wayne submitted his Report on Gun Laws for the Territory ofWisconsin to Congress. In this report, he recommended that all firearms not possessed by law-abiding citizens be confiscated and destroyed. This policy became known as the “Waupun Massacre” because 10 men, including six town officials, were killed when Indian warriors attacked their village during an attempt to capture three white women who had been visiting the community. After General Wayne’s report was released, many people began purchasing rifles in order to participate in militia duty or against Native Americans. As a result, gun targets started becoming more common in Waupun than they had ever been before. Many of these targets were made from large logs that were found lying around town or from abandoned buildings which were now being used as Firearms Range shootings areas.
Waupun is a town in Polk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,830 at the 2010 census. The current Mayor of Waupun is Rich Bigham. The town site was first settled in 1838 by Zenas Salkowski and his family. In 1848, John Vining and his father-in-law, James Armstrong, founded the village of Waupun on land purchased from the Sauk people. A post office was established in Waupun in 1850, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1901, the village of Waupunki incorporated as a city under the name of "Wauson." The city government changed its name to "Waupun" on July 1, 1907. On February 17, 1912, a fire destroyed most of downtown Wauson; however firefighters managed to save many homes and businesses including the Masonic Lodge #2 which still stands today as one of the town's most notable landmarks. In 1916 referendum voters approved an ordinance providing for women to vote without men’s permission or liability. On November 3rd 1916 “The Women’s Political Club” met at home of Mrs Gertrude Bliss to organize Woman Suffrage League with Carrie Chapman Catt as President and Miss Alice Paul as secretary treasurer (the first woman ever elected statewide). This club lobbied hard for women to be included on all levels of government starting with City Council but were unsuccessful until 1917 when they organized into Ward 2 Councillorship with Mrs Clara Barton serving consecutively from 1917 through 1933; following her death Mr George Woolridge took over from 1933 until his own death in 1949 when Mrs Esther Blake assumed responsibilities for Ward 2 Councillorship effective January 1st 1951 through December 31st 1957 inclusive).
