The Waupun Armory was founded in 1876 and became one of the most well-known arsenals in the Midwest. The armory built a large collection of firearms, including many rifles and pistols, which were used to protect the town from raids by desperadoes and other armed criminals. The armory also manufactured fire arms for use by local militia forces. In 1911, the armory was destroyed in a fire that swept through the building.
Waupun is a small town in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the ten largest towns in Wisconsin and the only one to be located on the eastern border of Milwaukee County. The first settlers in Waupun were Dutch immigrants who arrived there in 1836. A post office was established here in 1847, and by 1860, Waupun had a population of just over 100 people. However, it would not become a significant community until after World War II when growth came from businesses that began to open up along Interstate 94 and other economic development opportunities. By 2000, Waupun's population had grown to 9,000 people; however, its downtown core remains largely rural with few if any businesses located within walking distance of each other. One aspect that has helped make Waupun a popular tourist destination is its wide variety of cultural attractions which include several museums including the University Museum of Art and the Pioneer Village Museum. The history of the firearm shirt is a long and convoluted one. The first firearms shirts were worn by American Revolutionary War veterans in the 1770s as a way to show support for the cause. Riflemans would wear green and blue militia uniforms with their rifles on display, while pistolners sported white shirts with pistols holstered on them. In 1812, U.S. Marines started wearing rifleman's clothes while engaging in combat against Spanish forces at Vera Cruz, Mexico City, which helped popularize the style among American soldiers. By the 1850s, riflemen had largely replaced militia troops as main combatants in American conflicts, and so clothing manufacturers began producing military-themed T-shirts specifically for this purpose. One of the earliest T-shirt designs featuring firearms was produced by Joshua Barney & Sons of Philadelphia in 1856. The design featured an image of a revolver firing a musket ball into a target from a distance, similar to how revolvers were used during the Revolution period. This type of shirt quickly became popular among professional soldiers and law enforcement officials, who appreciated its simplicity and effectiveness when using firearms outside of battle conditions. Waupun is a town in the state of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. Waupun is part of the Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waupun were traders and missionaries from Holland in 1636. German settlers started arriving in 1837 and soon after erected a log cabin on the site of present-day Waupun High School. A post office was opened in 1847, and by 1860 there were nine residents living in Waupun. By 1870 there were over 100 people living in Waupun and it had a sawmill, gristmill, ammunition works, store building, barns and outbuildings. In 1872 gold was discovered near West Allis and soon thereafter many Germans began coming to WI for work at the new gold mines which became known as “the Milwaukee Goldfields” On December 20th 1873 an act was passed by the Wisconsin legislature entitled “An Act to establish a Township within this State for theame name” with boundaries that would include present day Waupun In 1893 a new town hall (later called the County Courthouse) was built north of downtown Wauswaunee on land donated by Elijah Burchardt In 1907 a schoolhouse (now used as an abandoned general store) was built east of downtown on land donated by Mrs. Anna Janssen In 1912 a grocery store (now used as an abandoned church) was built south of downtown on land donated by Mrs. Mary Jo Janssen In 1923 a new courthouse (later called court house)was built west of downtown on lot #1/3 purchased from Charles Friesen A post office called “Wauswaunee” opened in 1925 and continued operation until 1979 On May 1st 1927 WI entered into an Agreement with Canada under which WI agreed to become one province within Canada . On October 17th 1929 WI ratified this Agreement becoming officially a province named Ontario The first Olympics took place here on April 6th 1932 whenWI hosted its first modern Olympics . From 1934 through 1936 local athletes competed at two international meets held here including both curling championships
The Town of Waupun was organized on March 1, 1836. The first post office in the town was established on May 4, 1836. The first store in the town was opened by D. H. Eastman on September 25, 1837. The first school in the town was opened by A. L. Pritchard on October 12, 1837
