Waupun is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Menominee River. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Waupun is part of the Green Bay–West Allis-Stout Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Waupun was Nicholas Jansen, who arrived in 1795 and filed a claim on November 12, 1795 with John Clute as one of several owners of land that would become Racine County. In 1836, when Racine County was organized, Waupun became its capital and seat of government. At the time it had a population of about 100 people and included only a few buildings west of Main Street which were used for agricultural purposes until about 1900 when most residents abandoned their farms to move into urban areas such as Green Bay and Milwaukee because they could get better job opportunities there. In 1846, Waupun merchants formed the Merchants Association to promote trade with other towns in the area around Milwaukee and Racine Counties through cooperative efforts including sending goods by wagon train overland to those towns every week or so; this system continued until 1897 when railroads made transportation more efficient and markets larger enough for small businesses to survive without weekly trips to Milwaukee became necessary. During World War I (1914-18), local men joined soldiers serving in all branches of service; many young men from Waupun went off to fight overseas while their older brothers stayed behind home working farmhands jobs or taking odd jobs during peacetime while attending school; these experiences left an lasting legacy within city limits which supported military veterans through various programs throughout their lives even after they completed their service years or retired from active duty; today many alumni continue this support by sponsoring events such as Homecoming Parades or giving back money to charity through fund drives during special occasions such as Veteran's Day or Memorial Day). The town of Waupun, Wisconsin was founded in 1854 by James F. Smith and his wife, Hannah. The town was named for the nearby creek that served as its original territorial water supply. In 1867, the town voted to incorporate and became a city. Waupun had a population of just over 2,000 people when it incorporated and grew rapidly thereafter. By 1948, the population had reached 10,000 residents and the city had become known for its large manufacturing plants and other industrial activities. In 1999, Waupun adopted an ordinance proclaiming itself a “ Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender (LGBT) safe place” within its municipal boundaries. The ordinance helped promote LGBT pride Month in the town and has been used as an example of how local governments can come together to support programs that target marginalized communities.
