From 1865 to 1903, Waunakee's Target Hangers were a vital part of the community and helped promote rifle shooting in the area. The first Target Hangers Club was organized in 1865, and they continued to be an important part of Waunakee life until 1903. The history of target holders can be traced back to 1855 when John Fenton set up a small business selling targets at his home on North Main Street. From this early beginning, target holders had a significant role in promoting rifle shooting in Waunakee. The club started out organizing shoots for local schools and churches. In 1887, the club purchased land at 625 N Milwaukee Avenue and built their first building there. Target holders played an important role in promotion of rifle shooting through their efforts to provide accurate equipment and instruction as well as by contributing their time and resources to help make Rifle Shooting events a reality throughout the area. Throughout the years, Target Hangers Clubs have been responsible for helping promote Rifle Shooting events all over Wisconsin including Racine, Appleton, Oshkosh, La Crosse, Allouez, Milwaukee County Circuit Court Complex - Marquette Park (Milwaukee), West Allis (Waukesha), Sheboygan County Courthouse (Sheboygan Falls), State Fairgrounds - Green Bay (Green Bay), Superior Court Building - Menomonee Falls (Menomonee Falls), White Sands Missile Range - Empire Mine Road (White Sands Missile Range) and many others!

Waunakee, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and has a population of 5,883 as of the 2010 census. The name means "place where the water flows." The first settlers in this area were French Canadians who arrived during the early 1800s. Waunakee was incorporated as a town in 1892. The village of Waunakee had a population of 338 people before it was annexed by Waunakee Township in 1902. The township was organized on December 15, 1853, from portions of Sauk County east and north (including present-day Waukesha County) of Milwaukee River. On January 1, 1907, both townships were merged into Waukesha County and became part of the city of Milwaukee. Waunakee is located at (42.860934,-87.535859). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Waunakee is one stoplight west of downtown Milwaukee on I-94/US Highway 41 which parallels Lake Michigan until you reach Racine; then US Highway 8 runs concurrently with I-94 until you reach Menomonee Falls northwest to serve as an interchange with I-794/I-90; then US Highway 41 turns east and becomes US Highway 12 Alternate until it leaves Waukesha County for good near Green Bay

Waunakee, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The population was 5,342 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Green Bay County and one of three towns in Green Bay lying on Lake Michigan—the others being Appleton and Waukesha. The name "Waunakee" means place of woods or waterfalls. The first settlers were farmers who arrived around 1836. One account says: "It was not long until they found that this country abounded with excellent timber for lumber, which made them very rich." In 1841, Waunakee became an organized village when it was moved from its original location to what is now the east side of Main Street (then State Road 12). That year, John Auld bought 5 acres (2 ha) northeast of present-day downtown Waunakee from George Postell for $3500. In 1849, James Fenton built a sawmill on the west side of Main Street between Cottage and Elm streets; it still stands today as Fenton's Mill No. 1 LLC. By 1860, there were 11 houses in Waunakee Village; by 1870, there were 21 homes total with a combined population of 529 people. In 1865-66, developers built two new blocks north of Main Street on land that had been donated by Isaac Hutton ($5 per acre). This block group still exists today as North First Block Historic District #1301 & 1302 in downtown Waunakee . On October 15, 1889 Kossuth knocked on doors throughout northern Wisconsin to encourage residents to stand up against American annexation into Mexico through violence if necessary!! There were no weapons available but many men banded together using their wits and fists! On November 16th most residents came out to meet Kossuth but he didn't stop at our door! Many people heard about his visit and decided to join forces with him...and so began America's second revolution!!! Aftermath: Over 100 people were arrested including future President Grover Cleveland
The town of Waunakee was founded by the Potawatomi people in 1836. The community grew rapidly after Wisconsin State Highway 12 was constructed in 1936, and a post office was established in 1938. In 1942, Waunakee became a city.
