When the first settlers arrived in what is now Waunakee, they were met with hostility from the local Native Americans. The indigenous people thought that the new arrivals were sacrifices to some other power and so they did not allow them to settle in their territory. The settlers had to find ways to survive, and one of the ways was to trade goods with the natives. One of these traders was John Hawley. Hawley traded guns and ammunition for food, clothing, and other goods. He also traded seeds and medicines with the natives. Hawley realized that he needed to protect himself against attack by the native people if he continued trading with them. So he started creating his own shooting club in order to protect himself and his crew from attack by the natives. This club became known as The Hawleys Shooting Club because it was made up of men who had experience firing firearms. The members of The Hawleys Shooting Club started building their own rifles in order to protect themselves from attack by the native people. Over time, these clubs became more successful at protection than anything else that they did.eventually,the government recognized these clubs as a form of self-defense and began providing them with weapons in order to help them become more effective at defense against attacks by Indians

The first shooters in Waunakee, Wisconsin started using firearms to hunt animals in the 1830s. The area was known for its deer and other game populations. By the 1870s, there were also a number of gunsmiths and rifle factories in the town. In 1892, Waunakee became a city and began to grow rapidly. Gun manufacturing stopped around this time because of competition from cities like Milwaukee and St. Paul. In 1907, Waunakee began installing eye protection products as part of their safety program. This was an effort to protect workers from injuries while working with dangerous materials or equipment. In 1925, the city passed a law making it illegal to use any kind of firearm without proper eye protection!
Waunakee is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Wisconsin Metropolitan Area. Waunakee was founded in 1855 as a village on the east side of the Waukesha River by Rev. George Hennepin and his family. The village disbanded in 1857 when it was moved to its present site on the west side of the river. In 1865, Waunakee became an incorporated town when most ofDouglas County were erected into townships; it remained so until 1984 when all but one township were dismantled and replaced with more villages through a process called "organized incorporation." The first settler in Waunakee was John Auld who arrived in 1854 from Scotland. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Auld's Cabin". A subsequent owner renamed it "Hendrickson's Cabin" after him and his partner, James Hendrickson (1792-1868). By 1870, there were 11 buildings in Waunakee including three churches – First Christian Church (built 1856), Second Christian Church (built 1860), and Third Methodist Episcopal Church (1872). One reason for this growth may have been because transportation improved with railroad construction nearby which made goods available faster than ever before for settlers to trade or use as their own homesock production could not match In 1876, Drury Pemberton donated land to form Waunakee Park which included . . . . Doris Weese opened her business selling groceries at 8th & Main Streets from 1926 until her death in 2003 at age 92 years old

Waunakee is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River near Green Bay. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Waunakee was first settled by European settlers in 1836, and incorporated as a town in 1857. It is named after an early settler, John Waunakee. The Fox River valley and its townsite were originally part of the Menomonee Indian Reservation where tribal members lived and hunted deer, bear, turkey, and other game animals. In 1836, George Washington Augustus Chisholm sold 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land to John Waunakee for $5 per acre ($140 total). The community of Waunakee was founded on this site on November 15th, 1837 by John Waunakee and his wife Hannah Cooks with fifty-six white men and six women who came from Menomonee Falls in Racine County to begin building homes. The first store opened in what is now downtown Waunakee on December 12th, 1837 by J S Thayer & Bros.. At that time it was called "Thayer's Store." A post office operated at Waunakee from March 4th 1840 through May 10th 1850; it was renamed "Green Bay" on July 11th 1860 due to its new location just south of Green Bay Academy (now West Technical College). With only five residents registered for election during the entire term of Governor Joseph Atkinson (1846-1848), one possible explanation for the low turnout is that few people chose to participate in local government because they did not feel their needs were fully met. In 1857, incorporation as a town occurred when many residents voted unanimously to accept an offer from then-Governor Nicholas Fenton to become a municipality under his auspices with full power over all village affairs including taxation and fire protection services. The name change reflects how much smarter than average people felt about being able to do more than just own property within their own village limits while also having some level of control over municipal affairs which allowed them some respectable stature as citizens rather than simply farmers or Merchantsvilians who had nothing more than access to resources but no say in how those resources would be used or distributed? Accordingly businesses started popping up throughout downtown such as Saugatuck Glass Works #1 opened December 20th 1857 by J C Hutton Jr., which manufactured leaded glass windows starting out small with four products; green cheese puffs developed into today's Gouda product line January 3rd 1861 by Elijah White & Sons followed October 2nd 1861 by Julius Hennepin Paper Mills Ltd., Manufacturers Of Cotton Paper And Paper Hatbands company began producing paper hats February 14 1862 under license from Nathan Myrick Cooley & Brothers catalogue raison d'etre became Ward’s catalogues beginning September 25 1865 The first grocery store open at 615 Main Street - Mrs A Haggerty’s grocery - November 5TH 1865 Mrs Barnes got her start at 712 Main Street as a dressmaker February 9TH 1870 when she took over father’s pawn shop next door A post office operated at Green Bay from July 11th 1860 through May 10th 1950; it was renamed "Waukegan" on August 17 th 1960 due to its new location just south of St Ignace Catholic Church across I-94
