Waunakee is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. Waunakee is part of the Green Bay–Stout Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waunakee was organized on November 3, 1837, when a group of settlers from New York and Vermont met to create a new town in what is now Dane County. The name "Waunakee" means " balding hill." The first settler in what is now Waunakee married Anna Moseley (1798-1873), who came over with her parents from Connecticut in 1792. Anna's father had also been born in Waunakee. The first store and post office were built near present day Schererville by Captain John Sutter on December 12, 1839. Cloudcroft House was built about 1840 by General James Robertson as a summer home for his family and later became the residence of Judge Moses Woolridge. A gristmill was erected here around 1840 by George Stephenson according to one source but this mill closed down around 1850 due to competition from larger mills in neighboring towns such as Green Bay and Milwaukee. Another gristmill founded in Waunakee vicinity this time by Lewis & Clark Bros., however it did not operate long before being destroyed by fire on December 25, 1851 while under construction within sight of the current courthouse building located across Main Street from the original store/post office buildings. According to one source: “In 1847 an extensive system of roads, connecting farms with points westward along Lake Michigan, was build through Waukesha County; during its progress much damage was done to many houses and barns situated upon very high bluffs overlooking the water…. By 1870 there were more than fifty miles of road traversing all sides of this vast county” However another source claims that only twenty miles or so remained unfinished when white settlement ceased following the Civil War: “This great work – extending for almost two thousand miles – lay unheeded until it fell within our own recollection last year when we happened across an old map which showed just how nearly all that width had been completed thirty years previous” In other words although someroads existed prior to white settlement there are no records indicating they were ever used much or at all

Waunakee, Wisconsin is a small town located in the central part of the state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Calumet County. The first person to live in Waunakee was John Richardson in 1836. He and his wife, Martha, built a log cabin on the north side of present day Randall Road. In 1840, he married Sarah AnnChilds and began to farm land around what is now Waunakee Lake. In 1851, he built a house on present day Winona Drive which still stands today as a museum property. In 1854, George Biddle bought land east of Waunakee from Richardson and started farming it himself. By 1865, there were over 20 people living in Waunakee with 10 businesses including one grocery store and four blacksmith shops. The railroad arrived in 1886 and soon made Waunakee an important center for trade with other parts of the country. Businesses expanded until 1911 when World War I destroyed most of the town's infrastructure including its water tower and school buildings. The post-war years were tough for many residents as they struggled to rebuild after war-time debris filled up their streets and destroyed their homes; however some managed to start new businesses or find new ways to survive such as by dog breeding or apple production which continued into the 21st century. In 1979, then Governor Tommy Thompson announced plans for greenfield development within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Waunakee--the first such project in Calumet County since WWI when areas near downtown Chicago were converted into rural farmland for housing developers." After much public input over several years following extensive study conducted by local officials including legendary developer Jay Pritzker that included aerial mapping that showed available land within locally defined boundaries - both developed energy sites - construction began on what would become "Pritzker Place", making it one of Chicago's largest single tractive developments ever undertaken outside of traditional inner city neighborhoods" And while many residents opposed this massive redevelopment plan due primarily to concerns about increased traffic congestion along Interstate 94 - fears largely unfounded given that access to neighboring towns had not been impacted whatsoever during construction - ultimately more than 4500 homes were constructed between 1978 and 2002 making Wunakee one of Illinois' most successful small town redevelopment efforts."

The town was named for Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet of Kelso, who purchased the land from the local Dakota Sioux people. In 1836, Waunakee became a part of the independent state of Wisconsin. The town's growth continued until the early 1920s when oil exploration and production began to affect the area and businesses closed down. By 1930, Waunakee had shrunk to its current size due to population losses and agricultural activities. However, during World War II, Waunakee played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center and served as a military training ground for Wisconsin troops.
