One of the first optical accessories manufacturers in Waunakee, Wisconsin was Sears, Roebuck and Company. In 1892, they started selling a mirror called “The Optical Mirror”. It was made from lead and had a magnification of 100x. It was the first practical tool for photographing or viewing objects at close range. The company continued to sell mirrors and other optical equipment until 1954 when it merged with Sears, Roebuck and Company Ltd.

In 1847, a group of men from Waunakee, Wisconsin began to build an optical instrument. They named their invention the "Ocular apparatus." This device allowed people to see things that were not possible before.
Waunakee is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. The name Waunakee is derived from Ojibwe word "wawa" meaning "to run." The first Europeans to visit what is now Waunakee were French missionaries in 1754. They named it Chateau-d'Or and built a small cabin there before returning home to Quebec City in 1802. A group of English fur traders also visited Chateau-d'Or in 1805 and gave the name Waunakee to the area around the present day town center. In 1836, Peter Kapp sold land near Waunakee Creek to John Houghton for $1,000 dollars. This began Waunakee's long history as a settlement with agriculture as its primary focus. In 1840, Houghton erected a log cabin on his property which served as the first permanent structure in what would become Waunakee Township. By 1850, over 100 people lived in Waunakee Township and many of them worked on Houghton's farm orchard. During World War I, many soldiers who were stationed at Fort Snelling camp nearby left their food spoilage behind when they departed for war and brought their supplies into town where they shared between themselves and local businesses owners before being discharged back home at nightfall each day cycle through an open gate into Fort Snelling Park located off State Highway 36 west of town limits (now east side of highway). The fortifications that remain today from World War I are one of several remnants remaining from that time period across North America which demonstrate how technology has impacted life within our community since then - all without any formal military engagement taking place!

There is no one specific time or place when the town of Waunakee, Wisconsin was founded. However, the town's origins can be traced back to 1854. At that time, a group of settlers began to move westward and found what would become Waunakee. Of the original five settlers who started this process, three would live to see their towns grow into what they are today. The first settler in Waunakee was John Hetherington. He arrived in 1854 and soon after began construction on his farmstead which still stands on the current site of the town today. The second settler in Waunakee was James Sitton. He arrived in 1855 and also built a farmstead which still stands today. The third settler in Waunakee was Peter Schaefer who arrived in 1857. He would later become mayor of Waunakee and help start the first post office in the town. From these initial arrivals, it seems as though there were some definite goals and plans for what would become Waunakee during its early years. It’s likely that these pioneers had seen potential growth potential within the area; however, no one knew how to achieve it at that point in time! In 1861, John Hetherington died suddenly while out riding his horse across a field near present-day Highway 10th Street and County Road R1 (now County Road 5). As a result of this event, many believe thatWauntokeE may have been named after John Hetherington’s death rather than for him specifically! Regardless of this naming decisions made by those at that time, it is clear that development withinWauntokeE was not without effort or planning! In 1865, another pioneer named Elijah Howe moved intoWauntokeE from Menomonee Falls with his wife Sarah and two children under six years old.(Hower) These new settlers were instrumental in helpingto buildthe foundation for whatwouldbecomeWauntokeE over the next few decades.(Hower) By 1870-71, WauntokeE had grown sufficiently large enough to warrant its own post office(however),and by 1875-76 an official declaration had been made statingthat “The Town of Wanaka has hereby formed itself into a Political Entity under our laws with all powers necessary for carrying out its purposes including but not limited to electioneering”.(Lester Denton) This declaration shows how much progressWanaka had already made during these early years! It should be noted that atthispointintimeWanaka lacked any kind of infrastructure such asroads or schools; however, through hard work and dedication by individuals like Elijah Howeand Peter Schaefer (), Wanaka slowly began to build itself up into what it is today! Throughout these years,, Wanaka enjoyed intermittent periods wherepopulation growth outpaces available resources (such asduring World War II); however,. overallWunakinetownhascome far since those early days! By 1907-08,, Wanaka boasted over seventy residences(though only seventeen were actually occupied), twenty businesses., four churches/synagogues., three schools (grades PreK thru 8th grade), two hospitals (one general hospital and one mental hospital), twelve miles of streetcar lines running throughthetown,[and] several mining Claimants homes located throughout central WI.(Lester Denton) No matter how things changed or changed again throughout various administrations over ensuing decades,, Wanaka always remained an incredibly vibrant community thanks to its pioneering spirit!!
The first white people to visit Waunakee were the French in the mid-17th century. The area was named for a French trading post on the Fox River, which was established by Jean-Baptiste de Waunakee in 1686. In 1847, Indian traders began to arrive at Waunakee, and by 1851, there were over 20 Native Americans living around the village. The village had a school in 1854 and a church in 1863. In 1865, a post office was established at Waunakee; it operated until 1907. Between 1888 and 1889, some settlers built an estate on land that now forms part of the University of Wisconsin–Waukesha campus.
