Waunakee is a small town in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Sauk and Winnebago counties. The first settler in what is now Waunakee was Nicholas Flournoy, who came from Canterbury, England in 1834. He named his land "Waunakee," meaning "a place where there are many trees." Waunakee began as a stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St Paul Railroad. A sawmill was built here in 1872, and soon afterward mills were built at other points around the town to produce lumber for buildings and rails for trains. In 1907, one of these mills closed because it could no longer compete with faster-growing towns such as Racine and Oshkosh. In 1912 Waunakee incorporated as a village under the name of Northdale. When that name was changed to its current one in 1972, part of the reason may have been that then-Mayor Norris Hickey wanted to take advantage of nearby agricultural land for local development rather than rely on outside funding sources such as private donations or government subsidies.

Waunakee is a town located in the central part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the north shore of Lake Waunakee. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first white settlers in this area were David and John Roemer, who arrived around 1800. They named their land Waunakee after Chief Wahoo of the Oglala Sioux Nation, which they thought would indicate great strength and power. The first house built in what is now Waunakee was developed by Capten John Burchard in 1825, and he named it "Buchard's Grove." In 1837, Peter Kapp purchased from David Roemer some land east of present-day Waunakee for $2 per acre (1/4 mile). He built a cabin there and named it "Kapp's Grove." In 1840, Isaac Meeker bought from Kapp some more land to the south for $6 per acre (0.50 mile). He called it "Meeker's Grove." In 1845, Jonas Sisson bought from Meeker some more land to the east for $8 per acre (0.75 miles). He called it "Sisson's Prairie." By 1850, all of this property had been acquired by Jens Olsen and his family; they renamed it "Olsen's Prairie." That year also saw the construction of one ofWisconsin’s first schools – Olson’s Academy – on Olson’s Prairie. A post office was established at Waunakee in 1851, and mail started being sent to this area from Racine via wagon road on July 2 that year.
