Waunakee is a town in the Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,927 at the 2010 census. The town was named for Waunakiwin (Mahican) and his brother Wuncumkeag (Ozaukee). The first white settlers in what is now Waunakee arrived in 1854. They were led by David Richards, an American fur trader and one of the original men on the Iowa-Wisconsin border. Richards had been born in 1785 near Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In 1854, he and his family founded a small community called Richardson's Prairie on land that later became part of Waunakee. The town name derived from Richards' initials: WAU-nakiwin-wun-kaku (WAU = David Richards; nakiwin = place), which means "David's Prairie." In 1875, two brothers named Isaac and Edward Jansen settled in what is now Waunakee. Isaac Jansen had come to America from Holland when he was just over 16 years old and married an American woman named Martha Hennepin. After their marriage, he began operations as a furrier in Batavia, New York Territory. He moved to what is now Waupaca County when Wisconsin was organized as a state in 1848. Isaac Jansen helped found Green Bay in 1851 and eventually served as its first mayor. When Green Bay became an incorporated city in 1896, Isaac Jansen donated land to make up for some of the lost tax revenue that City Hall had generated since incorporation day. In addition to his philanthropy for Green Bay, Isaac Jansen also donated land to create Uptown Park within Waupaca County limits – making it one of the largest parklands west of Chicago – and endowed funds at Winona College so that students could pursue arts or sciences degrees without parental consent or financial assistance from their families or close friends). Edward Jansen came to America from England about 1830 with his parents and siblings age 7 through 12 years old. At 15 years old he started working ona farm near present day Appleton while still attending school there until he turned 21 years old during which time he learned how to saw timber along with farming methods used then like plowing etc.. Edward then ventured out into this new country wherehe prospected various areas before settling down near present day Oshkosh area doing business as a furrier/suler until 1861 when he purchased 6 acres north ofpresent day Oshkosh with intent upon erecting there own home &chard producing whorlsilverware under license from English Manufacturer Messrs Bloomfield Jasper

Waunakee is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Mississippi River just upstream from its confluence with the Kankakee River. The Waunakee River was named for the tribe of Chippewa that lived near its course. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Waunakee County was a trading post called Fort Atkinson, established by French traders in 1778. By 1836, the population of Waunakee had grown to over 100 people. In 1848, the Wisconsin Territory was organized and Waunakee became part of it.
