The first known inhabitants of what is now Waunakee were Menominees and Potawatomi Native Americans. The area was first settled by European colonists in 1836 when they founded the town of Green Bay on land that had been owned by Menominee Chief Winnebago. The town was named for General James Ketchum, who fought in the Mexican-American War and received an award from President Andrew Johnson for his bravery. Waunakee became a city in 1959 and it has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Wisconsin with over 100,000 residents. The city has apubliclibrary system that includes more than 20 branches throughout its territory; as well as 10 high school districts (Elkhorn, Hinsdale, La Crosse, Manitowoc, Milwaukee-Kenosha County Community Colleges District), two parks districts (the Wausau Park District and Appleton Parks & Recreation District), five villages (Aurora Heights/Hillsboro Village/Lansing Hills Village/Plymouth Village/New Glarus), and three charter townships (Beloit Township/Eaton Township/New Berlin Township). In 2012 Waunakee annexed portions of New Berlin Township. One major industry located in or near Waunakee is agriculture; there are several large grain storage facilities as well as some smaller feedlots used for livestock production. Manufacturing also plays a significant role in the economy with many local businesses producing products such as clothing, home appliances, furniture and automobiles

Waunakee, Wisconsin is a small town located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,324 at the 2000 census. It is the only incorporated community in Waukesha County. The name of the town comes from the Ojibwe word "waunaki", meaning "place where I can hunt." The first settlers in what is now Waunakee arrived in 1835 and built their homes on a bend in the Fox River. They were farmers with land holdings that extended from present-day Watertown to Milwaukee and east to Winona. In 1861, J. Sterling Price founded a wagon manufacturing company nearpresent-day Watertown and began trading goods with Indians along the Fox River Valley. The town of Waunakee was platted around this time and named for Price's home village in Scotland. A post office was established at Waunakee on November 21, 1875, and mail was sent via stagecoach to Racine until 1895 when a railroad was completed through here and mail was delivered by train to Chicago (nowMilwaukee). The years following World War II saw an increase in immigration to America as war refugees arrived seeking opportunities after V-E Day. Many people who had been born or raised within miles of military bases overseas started arriving here as well. This influx of newcomers led to growth in housing prices and businesses ownership; however, racial integration never happened smoothly here because many people wanted to keep their cultural differences hidden. In 1968, African Americans became registered voters for the first time in this county; however progress towards full racial integration didn't happen until after passage of legislation during Governor Tommy Thompson's administration which gave preference to native-born citizens over immigrants when hiring new government workers outside of state lines . In 1990s there were several changes taking place throughout American society that had an impact on Wauconda including: changing economic landscape with deregulation starting up across much of industry leading to less job security for bluecollar workers followed by stricter regulation during George H Bushes presidency culminating with raids against local drug dealers executed under Operation Neptune's Spear which caused large numbers of civilian casualties throughout America.; these events helped spur Stonington into becoming an early adopter of technology such as email before it really took off culturally among young adults
Waunakee, Wisconsin was first settled by the Chippewa in 1836. The town was founded on the site of a small post office and trading post which had been built by David D. Smith in 1835. The post office was moved to its current location in 1838. Waunakee initially consisted of one cabin and twelve settlers. It grew slowly at first, but by 1850 it had a population of fifteen residents. In 1854, Waunakee became the seat of government for the newly formed Racine County. By 1870, Waunakee had a population of eighty-six residents and it became an incorporated village in 1872. During World War I, Waunakee served as headquarters for United States Forces Europe (USFWE). On November 11, 1918, due to heavy fighting around the city center, Waunakee was designated as an evacuation point for people fleeing conflict in Belgium and France during World War I. After the war ended, Waunakee reverted back to its prior status as an unincorporated village until 1955 when it became part of Racine County again
