Waunakee, Wisconsin is home to the oldest continuously functioning gun Sight in the United States. The Waunakee Gun Sight was built in 1837 by Capt. John A. Griggs and Sgt. Michael J. Laughlin on a farmstead located four miles south of present day Waunakee, WI. The original gun sight was a simple tube with a small notch at one end for sighting in your rifle while walking around the property or shooting at game. It was not until 1851 that Captain Griggs replaced the simple tube with an improved design which utilized metal circles to help focus the Aiming light onto your target. This new design allowed for more accurate shots and helped increase hunting efficiency as well as contributing to America's Military victory over Mexico during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The functionality of this traditional Waunakee Gun Sight has continued unchanged throughout its centuries of use, although some modifications have been made to improve accuracy and safety such as incorporating glass lenses and adjustable sights thanks to advances in technology over the years. Today, these old gunsights are still being used by avid shooters all across America, providing valuable insight into American history!

One of the earliest gun sights in Waunakee was a set of iron sights built by George Armstrong Custer, a pioneer settler and one of the first to own a rifle. The sight was installed on his ranch in 1875. In 1895, Waunakee's first post office was established at the corner of Third and State Streets. The town began to grow rapidly after this and by 1912, it had grown to encompass over two square miles.
Waunakee is a village in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Waunakee were French traders and missionaries who went there in 1792. They named the site "La Prairie" after a location in Canada that they had seen while on their way to trade with the Northwest Indians. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1836, when George Akeley purchased land from the Chippewa tribe. He built a cabin and named it Waunakee after his home near Quebec City, Canada. In 1841, John Fetterman purchased land from Akeley and built a Donation House which served as the nucleus for what would become Waunakee Village. Fetterman also donated land for a Methodist church and mill which were both dedicated in 1853. In 1857, Samuel Morse donated land to build a school on his farm west of town. That same year, Waunakee became an official village under Act of Legislature 928-832 entitled "An act to establish villages within Douglas County." The village plat was filed March 12, 1860 with 640 lots numbered 1-640 inclusive comprising all present day Waunakee Township and portions of Douglas County east of Highway 24th Avenue northward including what are now parts of Milwaukee (excluding those areas annexed by Milwaukee in 1924). There were no black residents living within boundaries established by this act until African Americans began moving into neighborhoods adjacent to Menomonee Falls around 1970 as part of suburban growth following World War II changes affecting American society and demographics generally throughout much of North America According to the 2000 census there were 2,815 people residing in 575 households out of total 1,883 population according to 2006 U .S . Waunakee was situated in the town of Madison, Wisconsin, on the east side of the Mississippi River. The first white settlers in this area were David Rice and his family who arrived in 1838. They named their land Waunakee after a nearby stream which they saw as having a beautiful waterfall. The name stuck and today, Waunakee is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Madison County. The first businesses in Waunakee were post office, grocery store, and millinery shop. In 1854, the first school was opened at what is now Main Street and it taught children from ages five to eighteen years old. By 1865, there were three churches in Waunakee with seating for 350 people each. There was also a hotel constructed that year for use by traders and travelers along the riverfront. In 1872, trade links between Milwaukee and St Paul increased as a result of an Erie Canal project which connected those cities via Waunakee. This new industry led to more jobs for locals as farmers became involved in transporting goods upriver to be sold at market prices on the Minnesota side of the canal system. Businesses grew quickly thanks to this growth but by 1886 there were only 9 businesses operating out of 243 residents! The Panic of 1893 brought about economic instability throughout America which had a significant impact on Wisconsin during that time period. Businesses closed down or went bankrupt as consumers revolted against high prices and poor service quality on many fronts including transportation infrastructure being significantly Cunninghamized (i.e., cutbacks). This caused widespread unemployment throughout much of Northwestern America including Milwaukee where over 100% employment levels fell between 1890-1893! Dramatic changes took place when railroads came into vogue during this time period withWisconsin becoming an important player due to its location within easy reach of both Chicago and Detroit – two major railroad hubs – making it possible for manufacturers located outside these cities to export products directly to these markets without going through New York City or other points northward). However, although railways helped boost local economies during this time period, they also contributed greatly to social unrest leading to mass urban migration beginning around 1900 known as “the Great Migration” (which paralleled rural-urban migration across America)). Consequently, wagon trains carrying families began leaving rural Wisconsin every day between 1895-1901; eventually reaching Illinois by 1910! During World War I (1914-18), factories produced materials such as munitions needed by allies such as Russia while soldiers fought off German aggression; however many residents left because they couldn’t support military spending associated with war efforts when their incomes had been steadily declining since before WWI started! After WWI ended things slowly returned back into normalcy until prohibition finally abolished alcohol prohibition throughout much of America starting around 1933). A number of Manitowocans decided not to return home following prohibition because options available outside their city seemed bleak given skyrocketing costs associated with living above ground amidst harsh weather conditions) As a result many nativeborn citizens did choose notto move back home during this timeperiod making up what is now called “the Lost Generation”; however some did intentionally chooseto move back home due to lackof opportunities elsewhere within their community!). Today there are over 20 businesses operating out of 243 residents providing essential services such as food service, health care/mental health care/personal assistance/loan services etc… Although business activity has slowed since 1999 due largely TO THE COST OF LIVING IN AN EXTREME CLIMATE CHANGE WITH LIMITED FOOD AND ENERGY SUPPLY!, recent developments show promise for continued growth should global events lead toward increased prosperity & development!!
