Some of these people are still living today and can remember their time spent at Camp Pendleton or other combat zones during that time period! In 1969, Waunakee had its own police department which was eventually replaced by the current department in 2003 after being set up as an all-volunteer force separate from the town government. Until then, law enforcement activity took place through contract officers who were rotated out every six months or so depending on how much crime happened within the township center area (approximately 8 miles wide). In recent years there has been some discussion about increasing gun ownership rates within townships across Wisconsin due to concerns over gun violence and rural poverty (formerly considered an issue unrelated to firearm ownership). The first European to visit what is now Waunakee was Jean Nicolet in 1781. His map of the area shows a village on the east side of Muddy River and he named it "Nicollais". A post office has been in operation at Waunakee since 1854. On October 10, 1848, Dakota Indians led by Chief Little Bighorn attacked a white settler party near present-day Waunakee. Eight people were killed and three captives taken as hostages to be traded for goods with the tribe. One hundred miles (160 kilometers) from where they happened, another white settler party had also encountered Indian forces and lost six men including one captain and four officers before retreating back to their camp at Prairie du Chien unloading their supplies when they were ambushed by about twenty Sioux warriors led by Little Bighorn himself In 1865, settlers began moving into what is now Waunakee from points northward along the Muddy River Settlement included building log homes using convict labor under contract from Governor Nicholas Hervey of Illinois . Work on major construction projects such as roads began in earnest during 1866 after river transportation became available overland through land grants given by President Andrew Johnson In 1870–71 work started on a five-mile (8 kilometer) long street running through town which became known as Main Street today The first store opened in town on December 12th 1870 named Miller's General Store after Joshua Miller who donated land for commercial development By 1880 there were ten stores with a population of 2,500 people . By 1890 there were twenty stores with a population of 10,000 people . In 1898 an oil well was discovered offcampus within sight of campus

Waunakee is first mentioned in 1753 as Wanakaquique by Jean-Baptiste Point du Lac and it was named for General James Wadsworth Waunakee who fought with General George Washington during the American Revolution.
