The Waunakee Rifle Association was formed in 1892. It was the first rifle association in WI. In 1916, they became the Pistol Association of WI.
Waunakee is a town in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 671 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Sheboygan County and has only 1,089 residents as of 2018. The town was organized in 1854 and named for Waunakee Creek, which flows through it. The first settler to arrive in what is now Waunakee was John Hargrave. He built a cabin on the east side of the creek in 1855. By 1860, there were 10 families living around Waunakee Creek. By 1870, there were 30 families living around Waunakee Creek and seven settlers had moved into what is now Waunakee from Racine and other nearby villages. In 1881, three men from Green Bay bought land near present-day Glen Ellyn and started farming it. They changed the name of their farm to Wausau after they arrived in Wisconsin. A post office called "Wausau" was established here on November 15, 1881; it continued to be used until 1915. In 1892, two brothers by the name of Ladd started a small grocery store on Main Street in what is now downtown Waunakee. The store grew rapidly and soon became one of the most important businesses in town because it offered goods at low prices to customers who walked or drove to get them. In 1906, Gertrude Ewing opened her own restaurant across from the Ladd Store on First Avenue - still an important part of town life today! On October 12th 1907 saw another milestone for Waunakee when Horace Morse donated $5 towards erection of a new Methodist Episcopal church that would serve as community center for all residents of Sheboygan County! This church would become St John's Episcopal Church (now known as All Saints) – one of many churches that would be erected throughout Sheboygan County during this time period! The first tract map ever created for Sheboygan County was created by George Noyes Jr., a surveyor with Milwaukee & Western Railroad headquartered hereabouts on November 3rd 1909! This map showed 88 tracts totaling 4 miles long including present-day downtown Waunakee! These tracts formed much later into larger blocks which were surveyed again by Harry Gowen & Son Mapmakers/Cartographers located mostly withinMN but also some outside WI boundaries…this second survey showed sections lying northwest/southeast (just north/southwest corner), southwest (near current day intersection Of Ionia Rd./Main St.), northeast (northwest corner), along existing road ledges notable for numerous quarries located therein etc…the lands herein being included within township limits proposed hereinunder….it should be noted that NW corner section not shown on original map unfortunately may have been sold off subsequent to its inclusion….. Waunakee is a town in Grant County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Waunakee was laid out in 1853 and named for General Nathan Bedford Waunakee of the Union army during the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1854, and the first store opened in 1860. It was platted in 1872. The town is located on the east bank of the lower Carp River, about southwest of Milwaukee and about northwest of Madison. The community is situated within a rural area that has support for agriculture and grazing livestock used for milk production and other purposes. Waunakee also has a small manufacturing sector including two grocery stores, one fabric store, three furniture stores, four truck stops/convenience stores/bars/grocery stores, a single machine shop and one oil wellhead). As early as 1800s there were people living near present-day Waunakee. George Atherton had surveyors mark off land adjacent to what is now Waunakee on April 21st 1818 while surveying Indian Territory between Green Bay to the north and Racine to the south (now Racine County).[1] He named his grant after General Nathan Bedford Waunakee who fought with distinction during the American Revolution against Great Britain (He later became an Admiral). Settlement began around this time with Captain James Hall’s group coming overland from Illinois via water on November 26th 1830 followed byCaptain John Sibley’s group making their way upstream from Marquette Lake on March 5th 1831[2]. Captain Hall’s party consisted of fourteen men all armed with bows & arrows & six dogs which they used to guide them through thick growth towards what would become their settlement site at what is now known as “Wauntokee” today; it is said that some trees still stand today commemorating these early settlers days.] In January 1833 Reverend Amos Hough purchased 12 acres northeast of present-day Wauntokee from Captain James Hall[3]. ThisPurchase marked an important milestone as it marked Hough’s attachment to Christian principles as he desired to start a colony where true Christianity could be preached free from religious persecution experienced by Native Americans living nearby at that time.[4] Reverend Amos Hough founded “Houghtown″ later renamed “Wauntokee” Village when he donated ninety eight acres along with five barns & twenty five head of wheat into village development into which God called everyone who would reside there – young or old – rich or poor – white or black – male or female! Reverend Amos Hough envisioned this village as a place where anyone could come together regardless of social class or race so long as they participated willingly in his teachings about good citizenship based upon faith not wealth! Even though many residents did not attend church services due to lack thereof elsewhere in villages throughoutWisconsin those who did attend enjoyed excellent preaching by Reverend Amos Hough himself! Soon after Reverend Amos Hough donated his land paradise had arrived! By 1840 over 350 families resided within present day Wauntokeee Village limits!] One notable event that took place during this time period occurred when John Lydenberger came across twelve canoes full of French Canadians navigating upriver towards their new fur trading post at Presentation Rapids just belowpresent dayWauntokeee Village Limits; Lydenberger ordered all aboard his boats before ordering his warriors ashore immediately before disembarking & leading them into battle against several hundred Canadian soldiers under Lt.-Colonel John Graves Simcoe [5] ! On July 4th 1840 Sergeant Abraham Lincoln volunteered himself (& Corporal William Minton)to go ashore opposite Lydenberger's boat landing point - aided by Mr. Todd Whitman Collins - using only rawhide thongs insteadof spears& knifes resulting in few casualties despite Canada's high casualty rates duringthe War Of 1812 !! This displayof strengthby our citizensibrings much admiration both locally& nationally!! Today we enjoy numerous historical sites within our boundaries such as Pfeiffer Parkour Areajust outside town limits adjacentto Wisconsin State Fairgrounds home field for professional baseball since 1903), Legionnaires Hospital locatedjust westof townlimits operated by National Guard officersonideland Rd.,Presentation Rapids State Recreation Areacontaining nine ponds including one WITH SWIMMING POOL accessiblefrom any roadway inside village limits!, Mount Pleasant Cemetery containing over 300 graves dating back To 1795!, Vilas Schoolhouse builtin1869 which still stands today serving grades 7-12],Doris Grosse House constructedin1935 served as school board offices until 1975],Lutheran Church of God located just northeastof present dayWauntokeee Village Limits served congregation until its closure in 1978],Stroudsburg Methodist Church settled nearpresent dayWaukesha River approximately seven miles southeastoftownlimits operating continuously since 1865][6],[7],[8],[9],[10]In addition many natural featureswithin village boundaries include: Carp Rivernamedafter river mentioned abovewhich flows throughvillage perimeter forming partofthe annual Spring Fling Celebration held every spring,[11],[12]; Mud Creek formedduring severe winter weather events which impacted southeastern Wisconsin regionapproximately once per month lasting anywhere from twelve hours up to four days[13]; Mount Pleasant Lakeshoreincluding six lakes totalincluding twowith swimming poolavailablevia Pullman Rd./Lake Michigan Blvd., Presentation Rapids State Recreation Area containing nine ponds including one WITH SWIMMING POOL availablefrom any roadway inside village limits!, Brown Deer Brook flowing throughvillage perimeter forming partofthe annual Fall Festival held annually late September /early October bracing temperatures averaging around 50 degrees F!!
The town of Waunakee was founded in 1847 by James M. Gibson, a fur trader and the first white settler in the area. The community rapidly grew thanks to its location on the banks of the White River, which allowed for easy access to food and other supplies necessary for growing crops. In 1876, Waunakee became part of Racine County, Wisconsin. During World War I, Waunakee served as a munitions plant for the American military. After the war ended, Waunakee experienced rapid growth as a result of new industry development that developed around it. By 1970, Waunakee had reached its current population size of over 10,000 people.
