In 1850, members of the local community voted to adopt an ordinance establishing municipal government with its own police force and election process; this event is also considered to be when Waunakee began its current name - 'the Town'. In 1854, James Laughlin acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) along which he built what is now known as Wausername Dam on White River just south of present day Waunakee. This site would become home to many important industrial operations during the early stages of Wisconsin's growth as a country: Laughlin helped start up such companies as Galesburg Brewing Company (1855), Milwaukee Manufacturing Company (1857), Black Diamond Coal Mine (1859), Green Bay Brewery (1860), Badger & Drake Navigation Co.'s Iron Works No 4 (1862). It was here that Laughlin first discovered coal reserves that would later be mined at nearby Scravensburg Mines and used by numerous companies throughout northwestern Wisconsin during this period – including his own company! A group led by Reverend Halsey Fenton purchased 1 million acres (500 km2) northeast of present day Wausername Dam site for $3 million CAD in 1907; this tract would eventually provide much needed rural housing for people working near these new industrial sites throughout northeastern WI during this time period – especially those located near Kenosha Junction! Logan, who fought in the Mexican-American War and had a ranch near the village. In 1848, Waunakee became part of the Michigan Territory, which was organized on February 14 that year. On July 1, 1850, Waunakee became a part of Wisconsin Territory. It remained a territory until it was merged into the United States on January 15, 1863.
