Waunakee is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Waunakee is part of the Milwaukee–Wisconsin metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waunakee were French traders in the early 17th century. One account says they set up a trading post near the present-day intersection of Superior and Water Streets. Some local Indians also traded with French and English settlers. The first European to settle in what is now Waunakee was George Washington who built a cabin on Elk River about 1785. In 1837, John Dickey arrived from Canada and began farming there. In 1854, an act was passed creating Racine County; it included all of present-day Racine County except for Waunakee township which was east of the county line. The first courthouse in that township was built by Jno Mclntyre around 1860. In 1868, this courthouse burned down and be moved to its current location on Superior Street near the present day Administration Building (now Town Hall). When Wisconsin became a state in 1912, Racine County remained separate from Milwaukee County while both counties shared some other features such as registry offices and prison facilities; however, these differences eventually ceased to exist when Milwaukee County became an incorporated city with its own government in 1924. As late as 1960 only 2% of the population lived within 10 miles of any major city or town in Wisconsin! By 2000 only 8% did! However over 60% now live within 25 miles of one another! The town of Waunakee, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 and named for General John Waunakee, who had fought in the War of 1812. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Waunakee in 1837. The town was located on the lower Mississippi River and became a cotton trading post. In 1848, Waunakee was renamed for General James K. Polk, Ulysses S. Grant’s Vice President. Waunakee experienced growth during the early years of its existence. A mill was built in 1850 and a blacksmith shop opened in 1863. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in the town. In 1889, Waunakee incorporated as a village and began to develop into an agricultural community with plantations and barns that supplied flour to local mills and markets around the country. In 1922, Waunakee became the first village to be granted incorporation as a city by the Wisconsin State Legislature under then-Governor Alfred Evers’ administration. It would not gain full city status until 1972 when it merged with neighboring Racine to form that city’s present borders. In 1969, Mayor Harry Carver proposed annexing portions of Racine County to make up for population loss caused by suburbanization within Racine City limits over the previous decade or so; however this proposal never made it past Preliminary Review Board before being shelved again due to lack of interest from developers or citizens alike. Today, Waunakee is home to a diverse population that includes people from all walks of life who are engaged in various aspects of their daily lives - including agriculture, manufacturing (especially textiles), healthcare services, education and government services - making it one of WI’s most vibrant cities both economically and socially speaking
Waunakee is located in central Wisconsin, just east of the village of Purdon and west of the town of Menomonie. It was first settled in 1836 by John C. Marshall and his family, who named it for Waunakee Creek, a small stream that flowed through their farmstead. The first store at Waunakee was established in 1847, and the first school was built in 1853. In 1865, Waukegan County was created from part of Milwaukee County, and Waunakee became part of that county. In 1903, Waukegan County merged with Racine County to form Milwaukee County; Waunakee remained within Milwaukee County until its annexation by Racine in 1998. The community has had several name changes over the years: Star Lake during World War II; White Sands during the late 1800s; Black Hawk during the early 1900s; Prairie du Chien during the 1930s; Oconomowoc during World War II; Prairie View A&M University during the 1960s; and finally its current name, Waunakee, when it was platted as a town in 1876.
