The town of Waunakee, Wisconsin is located in the Driftless Area of the Midwest. The population was 1,912 at the 2000 census. This small town is nestled on a small river and surrounded by forest. In addition to its natural beauty, the town has a rich history that dates back to 1847. Waunakee was founded by German settlers in 1847. The name Waunakee comes from an Ojibwa word meaning "happy place." The first settler in Waunakee was Peter Kappeler who arrived in 1849. At the time, Wunoka Creek ran through the town and there were no homes or businesses other than a few stores and a school. Kappeler built his home on what is now Main Street and began trading goods with other villages along the creek. In 1851, John Dillingham purchased land east of present-day Waunakee from Michael Bechtold for $2,000 dollars cash. Dillingham had removed all Native Americans from their traditional territory east of Milwaukee River and established himself as one of Milwaukee's most influential entrepreneurs during this time period. He soon became interested in developing land west of Milwaukee River into what would become Waupun County – an area that he would control for over fifty years! Dillingham named his new settlement after his deceased father, George Washington Dillingham Sr., who had died two years earlier while serving as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President during the American Civil War (1865-1868). Dillingham quickly developed relationships with key landowners within Milwaukee County – including Abraham Lincoln and Moses Morse – which helped him build support for his development proposals throughout Wisconsin Territory (later Northwestern Illinois). By 1850, he had organized a well-funded team of surveyors to map out Waupun County's boundaries; within five years, he had acquired more than eighty percent of all property within modern-day Waupun County! By 1852, he also constructed several rudimentary buildings – such as a courthouse building and jail – within what is now downtown WIaupun! This rapid expansion allowed Dillingham to rapidly become one of Wisconsin Territory's most successful businessmen; within only eight years (1850-1858), he had amassed assets totaling nearly $100,000 dollars! Unfortunately for DillingHAMs success story however, legal disputes repeatedly arose throughout his territory (including multiple lawsuits against neighboring towns) which inhibited economic growth overall…anda drove him into bankruptcy around 1860! In spite of these difficulties however, by 1862 Dillingham finally had enough financial stabilityestablished himself as one of Wisconisins most powerful men;he resigned from business operations but continued to play an important role in state politics until his death three years later at age ninety-eight! Like many small towns during this time period however, when technology advanced beyond old methods like agriculture or hunting/fishing etc., demand for goods exponentially increased prices prohibitively high tariffs not allowing farmers/ ranchers access pricing power necessary for profitable production

Waunakee is a town in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. The community of Waunakee was founded in 1836 by Miles Winback and his wife Lucretia. It was named for the Waunakee River. The first settler at Waunakee was Miles Winback, who came to the area in 1836 with his family. He and his wife Lucretia platted what is now Waunakee Township on land they had bought from the Sauk people. They named their new township after the river that flows through it – Waunakee being an unreleased Native American name meaning “the place where gladness dwells” or “happiness”. In 1840, settlers Peter Kapp and John Saxony moved to Waunakee from Muskegon Heights, Michigan Territory. They started a small farm and store there until their deaths in 1848 and 1849 respectively. Their two children, John Jr., born in 1840, and Mary Jane Kapp (1841-1920), continued farming there until 1850 when they moved to Sheboygan County to become residents of Beloit). In that year, they sold their farm to Jacob Sauerwald and began construction of a house on current day Main Street which still stands today as one ofWaunakee's most noticeable landmarks.
