Waunakee is one of the most diverse small towns in Wisconsin with a wide variety of cultures and religions. Ammunition production dates back to 1854 when American muzzleloading rifles were first used in this area. The center of ammunition production shifted from Waupun to Racine in the 1920s due to advances in technology and the demand for new munitions by both combatants and civilians during World War II. In 1970, ammunition manufacturing was again moved to Waupun due to an increase in demand for military ordnance products throughout the United States. Today, Waunakee remains one of the leading producers of ammunition in North America.

A railroad station was built here in 1907 and service ended in 1969 when Amtrak made its first stop at this location near Milwaukee County limits

Waunakee is a town located in the Town of Waukesha, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,373 at the 2010 census. Waunakee was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Colburn and his wife Sally Cushman. It is named for JohnWAunakee, an early settler. The first steamboat to reach the Great Lakes arrived at Waunakee on September 24, 1846. The Fourth of July celebration in 1865 marked the first time that all five towns in Milwaukee County were united under one flag as part of a patriotic parade through the town streets. In 1954, Waunakee began annexing adjacent villages (Savage and Richmond) making it its own municipality with a population of 10,000 residents. In 1965-1966 there was significant development when Waukesha County voters passed Proposition 13 which outlawed local control over education within public school districts and gave rise to private schools throughout the county (the "Wisconsin School Reform Act"). This decision had far-reaching consequences for education inWI because it increased tuition rates for state universities and colleges by 50%. As a result of this legislation, many students from rural areas such asWaunakee found themselves attending expensive urban institutions while those from more economically advantaged backgrounds were left out entirely or received inferior services at these same institutions. In response to this situation Governor Richard Nixon established The Wisconsin Roundabout Program which provided bus transportation between urban centers and rural communities throughout the state. This program helped to bring about social change by providing middle class citizens with an opportunity to participate in government without having their taxes increased twice over via property taxes alone
The first white settler in Waunakee was Nicholas Moody, who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the banks of the river. The first school was established in 1839. A post office was established in 1840, and the town name changed to Waunakee in 1851. The first church was consecrated in 1850. The population of Waunakee grew slowly until the early 20th century when it exploded due to waves of immigration and new businesses sprang up. In 1910, Waunakee became an incorporated city with a population of over 100 people.
