The first scopes were built in Waukesha, Wisconsin around 1854. The first telescope was a 6 inch refractor made by J.B. Henniker and it was used to view the sky at night. In 1876, Reverend John Slingerland built the first reflecting telescope in America which he called the “Waukesha Telescope”. This telescope helped scientists learn more about astronomy and offered a better view of the night sky than any other type of telescope at that time. By 1916, there were over 150 observatories across America using mirrors or lenses to collect data about the stars and planets.

Waukesha, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Milwaukee County and one of the first three cities within Milwaukee County to be incorporated as a municipalities on January 1, 1836. Waukesha is also home to Marquette University and its main campus, as well as Kohl's Department Store and Sears Roebuck department store. The town was named for John Wauskeshire (1785-1852), an American Revolutionary War soldier and surveyor who had fought for independence during the war against Great Britain. The name "Waukesha" comes from two Cree words meaning "watercourse." One theory suggests that early settlers used this name because of the seasonal flooding of their small stream by hills in neighboring towns such as White Acres and Sheboygan Falls. By 1800, Wauskeshire had become an established settler in what is now Waukesha Township (). In 1836, when Milwaukee County was organized, Wauskeshire became part of it; however, he retained his own municipality until his death in 1852. On July 15th of that year, Wauskeshire's body was brought into town from his farmstead located about four miles east of where it currently stands for burial inside Mount Olivet Cemetery (). In 1865–66 local businesses erected a large granite cross which still stands near center square today commemorating Mr./Mrs./ Gentleman/Publican John Kapp (1816-1905) who donated land to make the cemetery possible (). This cross has been frequently mistaken for being original to Waukesha () - it actually dates back to 1915! Back then there were only five or six gravesites within Mount Olivet Cemetery (), so everyone contributed something! As time went on more people started moving into town proper (), so there are now over 150 gravesites scattered throughout downtown & surrounding areas). Today many locals still refer to downtown as 'John's Hill'. Every fall during Pioneer Day ceremonies all citizens are reminded “to remember John” with special ceremonies at various locations around town including our city hall lawn (& lots more locations throughout downtown every day!).

With improved technology came advances in astronomical research including spectroscopy, photography, astrology, climate change, seismology, oceanography, plate tectonics and chemical mapping. Today’s scopes are still used for scientific purposes but are now often also used for hunting targets or observing night sky phenomena.
