A water opening (a bay or creek) on the east side of town led to its original name because this location provided easy access tonavigation for boatmen during times of flooding rise or fall along the Fox River. In addition, there are several other theories about how Waukesha got its name; one suggests that Waukeesha may come from two Ojibwe words meaning "to go fast" and "-eska," which would make sense because early settlers could travel quickly through the water point to get to their farms or businesses. Another explanation suggests that Waulkeeksa might come from an initial translation of French phrase 'La ville aux éclairs,' which would mean 'the City with Bright Lights.' This theory stems from evidence that local newspapers in early days included translations into English of local news stories so residents could understand what was happening around them. Early maps show property lines changing very frequently due to conflicts between different land owners so it is difficult to say for certain which theory is correct - however, both explanations make good sense based on context and evidence available at the time

Waukesha, Wisconsin is a town in the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. The town began as a small settlement on the north bank of the Menomonee River in 1838 and grew up around Waukesha Lake. It became an incorporated village in 1903. On January 1, 2006, Waukesha amalgamated with its neighboring towns of Racine and Sheboygan to form the City of Milwaukee. Waukesha is located on the border of Milwaukee County and Dane County. According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of ; of this, is land and is water. The Menomonee River borders it to the south; it forms part of the border with Racine to the east and Sheboygan Township to the west. The Village of Waukesha was founded on November 14, 1838 by three men from Rock Island: Joel Potter (1815-1892), Reuben Willoughby (1793-1867) and Jonathan Green (1796-1864). They were looking for a place where they could trade goods with local farmers while they awaited news that their family might be able to emigrate to America proper after crossing overland from Europe during what was known as "the Great Lakes freezes." After finding no takers within their first few days on site they abandoned their idea for a Village but continued trading name until 1840 when they changed it back to Waukeesha due to lack of traffic on that road leading there from town center which had been renamed “Lakeville” since 1812 because then Governor John Ashford built a dock at that location for boatmen going between Milwaukee and Chicago carrying passengers across Lake Michigan. The first settler in what would become Waukeesha was Isaac Goodyear who purchased two acres (0 0 0 m²) near present day Kimberly Drive and Commercial Street in 1841 from David Kappeler for $5 cash plus four barrels (4 lorryloads) worth of flour he had acquired during his trip down La Crosse Bayou earlier that year.) Goodyear built himself a cabin outLogged about 40 feet wide by 20 feet deep with one room deep inside which served as his home until about 1850 when he moved into larger structures such as this one knowns as Goodyear's Grove or simply Goodyear's House which still stands today near corner Washington Avenue/Market Street.. In 1850 Nicholas Hohl also purchased some land east sideof now Washington Avenue/Market Street from Jacob Wehner along with his brother Prentiss Hohl who ran an inn called 'Prentiss' Inn which stood until 1903 when Professional Register listed it under 'Goodyear's Grove'.
