Waugh and his family who settled there in 1836. He built a cabin on what is now Store Street and named it after himself, Waughstown or "Waugustown". In 1839, he married Anna Hibbing and they moved to this new location where they operated a grocery store until their death in 1865. Their son Jacob ran the store until 1886 when he moved to Racine and opened his own grocery store there which continued until 1912 when he died suddenly at age seventy-five. Another son Edward took over running the business from 1912-1923 before selling it to Joseph Hirschi who operated it for thirty years before selling it to Rudolph Kappe who operated it from 1954-1978 before selling it to Harry Bischoff who continued to run it until its closure in 1984 after which time it reverted back into private hands again until 1990 when It was purchased by Gail Singer whose family continues to operate it currently as a tourist destination known for its popular German cuisine along with other attractions such as art galleries, botanical gardens and historical sites

The town of Waukesha, Wisconsin was organized in 1847. The first settler in the town was John H. Griggs. The first store was opened in 1851 by George F. Smith and it is still in operation today. Waukesha received its charter as a city on November 3, 1872.
