In 1875, the first law enforcement officer in Waukesha County was appointed by then-Governor John P. Quinn. At that time, the county had a population of only 4,000 people and there were no sheriff or police department. To handle the growing population and crime, Quinn created the Waukesha County Sheriff's Office in 1895. The office evolved into today's Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) within the Milwaukee Police Department.
