The first post office in Waukesha was established on January 15, 1836, and was called "Richmond". It was renamed "Waukesha" on February 14, 1857. The present name of the town comes from John W. Kaufmann's purchase of land near what is now the intersection of State Street and Washington Avenue in 1865. Kaufmann had named his farm "Kaufmanville" after himself and his brother-in-law Otto Kaufman (1802-1874), who donated the land for the community. In 1876, a new railroad depot was built by the Milwaukee Road at what is now Kedzie Avenue and Washington Boulevard; this depot served as an interchange point for trains coming into and out of Milwaukee Point Station on Milwaukee River levels below downtown Milwaukee. At that time there were no towns or villages within Winnebago County other than Racine and Kenosha; however, because so much freight traffic passed through Racine each day it became clear that a depot would be necessary to handle this traffic efficiently. In response to this need, commissioners decided to establish Waukesha as a separate village on December 12th., 1876. The first meeting of the village board took place on December 16th.; trusteesnumbered six (counting Commissioners John Mifflin (a Democrat from Kenosha) along with two Republicans). Waukesha grew rapidly due to its location close to railroads; by 1899 it had over 500 residents. By 1907 it had doubled in size again when an addition were made to its east side making room for another storeroom and garage; at this time also located at Kedzie Avenue and Washington Boulevard. A fire destroyed most of this structure early in 1912 butThankfully no one was hurt; only some damages were done including $5 worth of items lost inside! In 1916 Waukeeshas schools opened their doors after years of construction following state legislation which allowed public education be provided freeof charge within 100 miles radius Of Chicago while still providing tuition reimbursement for private schools attended outside those boundaries
