In 1838, David Wilmot purchased land east of present-day Waukesha and began to build a home that he called “The Mansion on the Prairie”. Wilmot soon realized that he needed more space so he erected an addition to his home which served as his courthouse until 1857 when Racine County moved its county seat to Milwaukee. This event marked the beginning of an era where Racine County became one of Wisconsin’s largest counties and played an important role in state politics until It merged with Milwaukee in 1907.) These developments led to increased traffic on Highway 441 which bisected Wilmot’s property; however, this did not slow down his development efforts as he continued expanding his holdings into adjacent farmland . This period of growth culminated with Wilmot’s purchase of 2200 acres southeast of present-day downtown WaukesHAu on October 10, 1865 from John Fenton for $1 million dollars ().
