A post office was established at Hegewisch on March 15, 1849.? By 1860 there were 27 residents living in Waukesa? After annexation by Milwaukee due to war efforts during the American Civil War (1861-1865), many military personnel barracks were constructed near what is now Watertown Boulevard; this area became known as “Camp Randall” after General John J. Randall who served nearby during that conflict.? In 1865, when Milwaukee became an incorporated municipality outside of Winnebago County?, citizens of Waukesha voted to become its first city Limitsaddict????????? As part ofMilwaukee Municipal Improvement District No 1 which was organized November 12th 1871?, incorporation was granted for Waussee by Mayor George Hoehn?? On February 8th 1870 City limits extended south 2 miles beyond current boundaries??? This extension included all adjacent properties south including present day West Allis and Racine ????? On July 1st 1870 incorporation for Racine became effective ??? The following year Madison annexed most of Iron Range including present day Waussee ??? With rapid population growth – spurred largely by manufacturing jobs within MILWAUKEE COUNTY - boundary extensions occurred continually throughout early 20th century ?? finally gaining full incorporation intoMilwaukee November 15th 1920??????? taverns such as White Bear operated until prohibition terminatedantle local drinking public ??? Other early pioneers include Jens Christensen (1814-1896) from Vorpommern; Peder Olsen (1821-1901) from Skandinavia; John Clausen (c 1795-1875) from Zealand; August Nielsen (1792-1865) from Lolland; Rasmus Hansen (1800-1858) from Jutland; Levi Lassen (? - 1840); Martin Rasmussen (? - 1840); Anders Andersen( ? - 1840); Hans Nansen( ? - 1840), also known as “Nansen of Waukesha”; Lars Christensen( c 1789-1800)? ; Peder Pedersen(c 1800-) ; Ole Moseby( c 1800-) . On February 11, 1851 during a snowstorm Jonas Sorensen plowed through knee deep snow to start a claim on section 7 of Lot 2 within present day Waukesha Township when he discovered coal seams under water near where the creek now runs. On July 10th 1865 Jonas Sorensen filed for Insane Patent No: 414 which claimed all of what became Waukesha Township including sections 7 and 8 east of Hegewisch Road! This would become one of the most famous patents in America! In 1863 the first mills were built in what is now downtown Waukesha by Peter Krantz and others forming part of Krantz & Company lumber company which soon merged into American Locomotive Company In 1886 US Steel Corporation purchased Krantz & Company lumberyard/mill complex along present day West Side Highway for $2 million dollars creating one of America's largest industrial park
The town of Waukesha was founded in 1854 by John A. Henniker and his wife, Anna C. Henniker. The town was named for the Wiscona River which flows through it. In 1872, the village of Waukesha was founded and became a part of the larger town of Waukesha. The first post office in Waukesha opened in 1875.
