The Watertown Rifle Club, Inc. was chartered in 1892. The first rifle club in the town of Watertown was formed on October 26th of that year by six men who had gathered to shoot at a local game. They built a small hut near the current site of the library and began meeting there to shoot from behind cover. In 1896, two members of the club were killed in a shooting game outside of town when their rifles misfired. This led to the formation of a company called “The Morning Star” which consisted entirely of volunteers from Watertown. In 1903, another member of the club was killed as he slept when his rifle discharged accidentally while he was changing it for use next day. This led to an amendment to theclub charter which stated that all fire arms must be kept unloaded at all times within limits established by management and not used except in cases where expressly authorized by club rule or order. In 1907, four members were killed during a match held at White Hall Inn when one member’s rifle malfunctioned and fired three rounds into the air before hitting someone else; this event is known as “The Great Fire” because so much smoke and heat emanated from both ends of the room during its brief duration. In 1912, clubhouse membership totaled twenty-five men; firearms were limited to shotguns only and ammunition could be bought only at special stores set up throughout town for this purpose. At this time, rifle range training sessions were also conducted using live fire exercises dummy targets instead of real people because accurate shooting could not yet be achieved with handguns alone due to some limitations with those firearms design factors specifically mentioned hereinabove: magazine capacity (15 rounds), hand hold grip width (14/16 inches), shoulder height (5 feet 8 inches) . It should be noted here that these limitations did not prevent many local residents from being able to attend NRA sanctioned target shootings events over these years although they generally occurred after 8pm sharp since handgun shooters enjoyed far greater merciful weather conditions then target shooters do today! In 1916, pistol range training classes were also conducted using dummy targets instead of live humans but no other changes took place within Watertown Rifle Club prior thereto! Watertown was platted in 1837 by George Washington Carver. It became a town in 1854 and was named for General David Logan Watertown who fought in the American Revolution. The first post office was opened at Watertown on January 10, 1838. The community of Watertown grew rapidly with the opening of the Wisconsin Central Railroad in 1860, which made it possible to reach Milwaukee quickly. The town eventually lost its importance as a commercial center after the opening of the Milwaukee Road, but it remained an important community until it merged with other towns in Racine County in 1962.
