In 1847, when territorial boundaries were established including present-day Wisconsin Rapids, Watertown became part of that new county; it remains a separate municipality today. In 1865, during America's Civil War (the conflict which ended with slavery becoming legal throughout most of North America), many workers who had built upriver trade settled in what would become Watertown - soon followed by farmers seeking ways to get products downriver without having to leave their homes or go through long trips overland. Development continued rapidly until World War II (in which Watertown helped lead Wisconsin into war against Nazi Germany) when wartime economic constraints caused a slowdown in growth rates combined with population declines elsewhere in western Wisconsin due to migration from rural areas into major urban centers like Milwaukee and Chicago (and later Detroit). Nevertheless, during those postwar years waterfront apartments became popular among residents commuting out-of-city because they offered more space than single family dwellings back then - something that continues to this day as suburbanites look for places to live closer to work or school while still having access to some waterfront amenities unavailable elsewhere on account of distance or costliness alone

Watertown is located in the town of Watertown, Wisconsin on the east side of the Kettle River. The first permanent settler in this area was Levi Coffin, who arrived from North Carolina in 1827. Watertown began as a trading post and later became an agricultural center. In 1854, the United States acquired land north of town and created the city of Milwaukee. Watertown continued to grow as a rail center and commerce grew with it. The city's downtown area was destroyed in a fire in 1906 and rebuilt with Federal assistance. Today, Watertown is a commercial and political center with a population of over 30,000 people.
