According to Wisconsin history research company The Historical Society of America, Watertown was founded on April 12, 1837 as a fur-trading post on Hwy 41 between Menomonee Falls and Racine. It grew rapidly during the 1840s when it became a center for wheat production and trade along both banks of the Fox River. In 1847, it became an incorporated town with a government that included three wards: downtown; east side; andwest side. In 1951, Watertown annexed neighboring West Allis after that community voted not to secede from its city limitsdue in part to water shortages experienced by West Allis residents during World War II caused by then-new Lake Michigan shipping channels nearby
Watertown was founded in 1795 by Potawatomi Indians. The town was named for the nearby Wisconsin River. The first settler in Watertown was John Dearborn, who arrived in 1796. In 1836, the town became a county seat of Racine County. It was moved to its present location in 1849. Watertown is home to the University of Wisconsin-Watertown and the Watertown Museum.
