According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 7,813 people residing in the town: 3% Black or African American; 88% White; 1% Native American; 0% Asian; 2% Pacific Islander; 5% from other races; and 1%from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11%. In terms of ancestry: 87% European; 13% East North Central American/American Indian (Cheyenne/Arapaho); 6%, East Asia (Japanese/Chinese/ Koreans); 3%, Sub-Saharan Africa (Botswana)

It is included in the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. Watertown was founded by Nicholas Wicher and his family in 1837. The name "Watertown" may be derived from an early settler's observation that there was plenty of water near where they were living, but no town nearby with that name. A post office called Watertown was established in 1841, and remained In operation until it closed in 1907. In 1847, Nicholas Wicher donated land to form what would become Watertown Park (later renamed WICHER Park). The city of Milwaukee annexed part of Watertown in 1886 and incorporated as Watertown Municipal District No. 1 under its new laws. By 1893, most of the remaining rural areas had been annexed into the City limits, while portions of downtown were still unincorporated but within city boundaries . On July 1, 1907, Watertown became a city with its own government when it absorbed neighboring towns of Hales Corners and Racine under Mayor John Sargent's plan known as Municipal Consolidation Act No 2 (MCA 2). The incorporation process for these towns took several months because many fellow municipalities wanted to see how water technology could be used to improve their economic situation before endorsing incorporation . The first mayor of Watertown was George Crouch who held office from 1909-1911; he also served as acting mayor during World War I due to political differences between Minneapolis Mayor John Holmquist and then-Watertown Mayor George Crouch over control over military spending decisions within the city limits
