In 1984, much to the dismay of many residents who felt their town was getting too suburbanized for their taste or lack thereof; then-Mayor Bob Kocher announced plans for annexation byMilwaukee which would have put more than 1 million people within commuting distance! Despite intense public opposition from locals and leaders throughout much of 1984 and 1985; Kocher proceeded with his plan to annex what were at that time considered barely populated areas making it one of only 2 municipalities in Green County (along with South Bend) ever annexed by another municipality! watertown has since seen rapid growth including several highrise buildings on First Street downtown dating back to the early 1990s Today there are over 10K residents living within commuting distance of Downtown Milwaukee while also experiencing significant retail development along First Street corridor leading up University Avenue as well as continuing activity along Lake Michigan shoreline providing plenty of opportunities for fishing and boating!
