Watertown, Wisconsin is an old town located in the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin area. It was founded in 1836 by a group of Clearwater farmers and their families. The town became aIJurisdiction in 1851. In 1915, it merged with the neighboring town of West Allis to form the city of Watertown. Watertown has been occupied by humans since at least 9600 BC when they traded goods with the indigenous Piscataway people. The first mention of binoculars is from 1792 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte used them to view ships coming into port on Lake Michigan. The first patent for a binocular was issued to Gideon Welles in 1802. By 1870, there were more than 100 businesses operating in Watertown. By 1880, there were over 1,500 businesses operating in Watertown alone! Binoculars spread throughout America during World War I due to their use as military spotting tools and as intelligence gathering devices during the war effort. During WWII, binoculars became very important as battlefield observation tools due to their wide field of vision and long range capabilities! Watertown is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the north side of the Fox River. The population was 20,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and is home to The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM), one of North America's largest research universities. The first permanent settler in what would become Watertown was Nicholas Wiseman in 1836. He purchased land east of present-day Watertown from Anthony J. Dickey for $10 per acre ($40 per lot). Wiseman named his property "Watersmeet". The town was platted in 1847 by John Prentice and Henry Haines, two members of the territorial legislature who were also founders of Milwaukee. In 1853, when Watertown became a city, it annexed neighboring townships including Maywood and Waukesha to form a consolidated municipality with a population of 15,000 people. The annexation created problems because it violated then-city charter rules that said only municipalities could have populations over 10,000 people. In 1906, an act was passed by the state Legislature which repealed all annexations made since 1898; as a result, Watertown reverted back to its prior size as an unincorporated community with a population under 10,000 people. In 1912, during World War I,, four water bombers from United States Naval Air Station North Island bombed German targets near downtown Watertown; this attack helped rally American support against Germany and help victory in WWI In 1942 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor,. USS « Arizona » was assigned to patrol off shore near Honolulu harbor when she heard reports about Japanese activity deep inside Hawaii; she determined that it must be an attempt to enter Hawaiian waters; accordingly she sailed into Pearl Harbor without warning her crew or passengers and attacked Japanese positions without Warning shot being fired thereby saving many lives
