Watertown, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Kenosha County. The population was 20,358 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous municipality in Wisconsin after Milwaukee and Madison. Watertown is located on Lake Michigan just north of Green Bay, east of Appleton and south of Oshkosh. It lies within Iron Range National Park. After years of steady growth culminating in 1992 with the creation of American Munitions Inc.--the largest munitions producer in North America--Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s share value plummeted from $30 billion to $12 billion due primarily to The Clinton Administration's decision not to renew several key defense contracts worth $3 billion! However, despite these difficult times Bethlehem has managed to keep afloat through aggressive marketing efforts and strategic investment; leading eventually to its current status as one of North America's leading manufacturers--second only to Raytheon! Watertown is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River. The population was 7,012 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. Watertown has been inhabited by humans since at least 8500 BC and was an early Native American trading post and settlement. The first European to visit Watertown was Capt John Smith in 1634, who named it after his hometown of York (now Toronto). In 1836, Congress authorized the construction of Fort Dearborn as a border fortification against possible Indian invasions into Indiana Territory from Canada. Since then, Watertown has become one of the most important settlements in central Wisconsin for its manufacturing base and commerce with other parts of Lake Michigan and downriver Illinois. The history of Watertown begins with two water mills which were built around 1800 to grind cereal flour for local farmers on the riverbank near what is now downtown Watertown. By 1830, there were six mills in operation producing flour for local markets as well as exporting flour to Great Britain and Europe via sea lanes. By 1840, these mills had all closed due to competition from more efficient equipment imported from England and United States Mills began production in 1846 based on plans drawn up by entrepreneurs John Geddes and Eli Whitney; they started production using power originally provided by a small windmill that stood on Hill Street across from First Congregational Church. In 1854, shortly after Stephen Alder obtained land south of present-day downtown Watertown through donation from his brother Amos Alder (grandson), Manufacturing Company town came into being when General Mills bought Alder's land plus seven others located east of Waukesha Avenue between Washington Boulevard and Mayflower Road for $24,000; this made it one of three towns within newly created Milwaukee County formed following Wisconsin's admission into the Union on August 14th, 1848 under Article V section 3(a).
