Early residents were farmers who used their land for agriculture, lumbering, fishing, hunting, and logging; however, by 1830 there were already enough people living in Verona to form a school board and restrictions on residency began to be lifted so that more people could live within easy commuting distance for jobs and shopping opportunities. In 1829 voters passed an ordinance establishing government by direct democracy instead of via elected officials appointed by governor or legislature; this provided new impetus for development in what had been primarily farmland around Verona Lakeside Resort (later known as North Park). In 1840 construction began on what would become one of Wisconsin’s largest public buildings – County Hall – which served as county courthouse until 1905 when it was replaced by the current County Courthouse Building across Superior Street from Municipal Services Administration building (MSA) now housing UW-Milwaukee police department headquarters located at 6th & Capitol Streets.). In 1851 voters approved creation of Town Board with five members instead of three originally proposed; this increased local control over aspects such as zoning laws and infrastructure development (such as roads). On October 15th 1865 local troops commanded by Colonel John Sanger burned down the village green after refusing orders to march into Chicago under American flag at 7 pms.; this event is generally considered to have started Wisconsin's War Of Independence Against Great Britain commenced.. The city of Verona,Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by brothers Isaac and Jacob Verona. The city's first settlers were farmers who had to leave their homes because of the Panic of 1837. In 1847, the town site was donated to the City of Milwaukee by a group of business men who included John Lantz and Peter Schofield. The two towns amalgamated on April 1,1898.
