The village of Verona was founded in 1848 by the merger of two other villages, Belleville and West Allis. The name is derived from the Italian word "verona," meaning "horse pasture." In 1850, a post office was established in Verona and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1854, a school was built and operated for grades one through twelve. A second school was built in 1895 and operated until 1933. The village had its first census taken in 1860, and held its first election that year.
