When the United States entered World War II, many of its citizens were eager to join the fight. However, because of the country's strict gun laws, few people in Wisconsin wanted to own a firearm. This led to a problem for our state because it was one of the last in the United States to ratify the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. As a result, only residents of Connecticut and Maine had access to firearms during wartime. The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence began working on behalf of Wisconsin gun owners in 1984. In 1990, they submitted an amendment to the State Constitution that would have allowed handgun ownership by all Americans regardless of residency or state law. However, this amendment was vetoed by then-Governor Tommy Thompson and did not make it through incorporation into the State Constitution as planned. In 1993, Governor Tom Bliskell issued a executive order that made possession of handguns Illegal without a hunting license or special permission from local law enforcement officials. The order became known as “The Bliskell Order” and effectively banned handgun possession in most parts of Wisconsin including Verona Township which is located just outside Milwaukee County. In response to The Bliskell Order, members of The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence started selling T-shirts with slogans such as "No more thief guns!" In 1996, Governor Christine Todd Whitman signed into law Senate Bill 584 which repealed The Bliskell Order in its entirety and allowed citizens from any county within Wisconsin to possess handguns without needing any special permits or licensure from local authorities. Today, there are over 2 million registered firearms across America andWisconsin is still one of America's most restrictive states when it comes to firearm ownership rights - making Verona Township one of those rare places where you can legally own a firearm!
