Verona is a small town in the central area of Wisconsin, located about 20 miles southwest of Milwaukee. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fox Valley region. The first settler in what is now Verona was John Prentice in 1836. He and his family were the first to take up land west of Milwaukee on what is now State Road 12. They named their new town after Verona, Italy, where they had been vacationing with their families during the summer of 1836. The first store in Verona was built on State Road 12 by J.G. Goode in 1892. Mr. Goode ran the store until he died in 1902. His son, George Fenton Goode Jr., continued the store until it closed in 1984. The building still stands and can be found within walking distance of most residents today! In 1916, when Prohibition became law in America, many farmers began to sell liquor across state lines as a way to skirt prohibition laws while still making money off sales tax requirements on beer and wine sold abroad! This allowed many small towns throughout America to become "dry" cities (meaning no alcohol). In 1921, when Prohibition ended nationwide, Verona became an official "non-alcoholic" city! In 1924, when Interstate 94 was completed through much of central Wisconsin and rural counties east of Green Bay into Illinois (the so-called “Great Lakes Highway”), Verona saw its heyday as a commercial center for truck traffic passing through its wide open streets! A number of large businesses moved into this vibrant community during this time including Kwik Trip Mart (#1 on our list!), Powers Trailer Park (#2 on our list!), and Wawa Super Buffet #3 on our list! However, by 2006 all but one business had either gone out or closed due to economic conditions within that specific industry; however Wawa remains active today as a popular casual dining restaurant! In 1812, Major General Zachary Taylor ordered that all artillery be converted to muzzle-loading firearms and renamed "ammunition." The first commercial ammunition was manufactured in 1814 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Company. In 1847, United States Powder Company introduced smokeless powder into Americas market with their new Starline propellant. In 1865, Winchester Repeating Arms Company began making centerfire rifles using Jacketed bullet technology which allowed for increased accuracy and range. By 1886, nearly all commercially available ammunition had been standardized as jacketed lead round bullets.
Verona, Wisconsin is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,035 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Winnebago metropolitan area. The Town of Verona was organized on March 14, 1853 after theWisconsin Territory was created from parts of La Crosse and Racine Counties. The first post office in Verona was established on May 6, 1854. In 1857, the town received a telegraph line which made it possible for people to communicate with other towns in the territory without having to go through Racine or La Crosse County. In 1870-71 there were two school buildings in Verona: one used by West Side School District #1 and another by East Side School District #2. In 1872-73 a third school building was built for both districts but it burned down within a year. A new school building was erected for West Side School District #1 in 1874-75 and for East Side School District #2 in 1880-81; this building still stands today as part of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church (later known as St Joseph’s) complex on Main Street in Verona. On October 25, 1886 the Town of Verona passed an ordinance legalizing gambling within its borders and allowing women to gamble too; at that time only men could gamble legally in most American townships north of Chicago because gambling facilities were considered “vice” activities that discouraged mixed socializing among men and violated gender purity regulations at the time. From 1902 until 1957 only white males could vote while black residents had to wait until they became citizens before they could vote; however starting November 1st 1957 all residents over twenty-one years old are allowed voting regardless their race or sex status. On January 1st 1959 black residents were finally able to vote without waiting until they turned twenty-one years old like white residents did before then
Verona was founded in 1836 by John and Anna Papp as a farmstead on the east side of the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a village in 1857. It became an important transportation hub for the area, with two railroads passing through it. In 1915, Verona hosted the first annual international fair in Wisconsin.
