In the 1870s, two brothers, John and Nicholas Steinmetz, founded the village of Two Rivers in southern Wisconsin. The town's namesake was a small tributary of the Big Sioux River that they named after their home town of Rotterdam, Netherlands. In 1875, when John and Nicholas died, their wives took over management of the community. They continued to operate it as a farming community until 1949. After John and Nicholas' passing, their wives continued to run Two Rivers as a family-owned business until 1957.
