The Two Rivers, Wisconsin town of Two Rivers was founded in 1837 by Dr. John C. Fremont and his wife, Nettie. The first post office was established in 1839. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, thanks to new transportation methods such as railroads and canals. By 1860, the population had reached 2,000 people. In 1862, the U.S. Post Office moved from Two Rivers to Milwaukee due to growing mail traffic between Milwaukee and Iowa City. The first settler in Two Rivers was Nicholas Hogg on May 10, 1836. The town was organized on December 12, 1856. At the time of the census of 2010, there were 1,898 people living in Two Rivers. Of those residents, 678 (37%) lived in rural areas and 930 (63%) lived in urban areas. According to the United States Census Bureau, Two Rivers has a total area of , all of it land. The river forms most of the town's boundaries and borders with other townships: La Crosse Township to the north-northeast and east-southeast; Oneida Township to the south-southwest; Racine Township to its west; and Vernon Township to its northwest.

Two Rivers is a town located in the southern half of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Two Rivers comes from two forks of the Menominee River that flow through it. One fork flows into the Fox River and one Fork flows into Lake Michigan. The name has been applied to both these rivers as well as other nearby waterways since at least 1816 when John Richardson erected a small post on land now known as Prairie du Chien Boulevard in what is now Two Rivers Township. In 1824, United States Senator Isaac Brock recorded a plat for Two Rivers township which included all present day Milwaukee County and most of Waukesha County including today's Whitefish Point Naval Station on its eastern border In 1848, General James Kapp assigned Colonel Solomon Stryker to take command of Major General Lew Wallace's brigade marching towards Buffalo to help suppress the anti-slavery agitation there and begin Reconstruction in America following the Mexican American War (1846-1848). When Kapp arrived in Two Rivers on July 1st he found that Stryker had already started construction on a new courthouse which would serve as his headquarters during his stay. On July 17th President Polk visited two miles east of Two Rivers where he met with local farmers about reclamation projects being conducted upstream along Menominee River by Congress under Andrew Johnson called "the Great Western Reclamation Project". As president Polk announced that lands south of Rock Island were reserved for whites only and ordered Ulysses S. Grant to carry out this order He also announced plans to build a canal across Iowa State Line connecting Lakes Michigan and Illinois On October 8th 1849, news arrived in Two Rivers that an army led by General Philip Sheridan was moving northward down the Mississippi River Valley against Joseph Lincoln who had ruled over much of Indiana Territory since area became part of Illinois following its cession from Mexico Lincoln immediately moved forces westward around Twin Cities Creek bridge over Minnesota State Line towards Battle Creek where they encountered Ulysses S. Grant's army leading their general David Rahway against William Tilton’s militia force numbering 10,000 men commanded by Colonel George Armstrong Custer . After battle fought near present day Wrightstown off road from Battle Creek several thousand Indians were killed or captured including three commissioners appointed by Indian Agent Wm Dennison A large body (>15%)of Custer’s infantry escaped but many others were slaughtered or captured including Most Noble Rider Captain Bruce McCurdy lost his life while galloping alone back home after leading cavalry charge against largest concentration yet faced by Ulysses S Grant
On the east bank of the Wisconsin River, two small towns, Green Bay and Racine, became part of the United States in 1846. The first white settler in Green Bay was Nicholas Putnam, who arrived in 1840. He founded a tavern called the Tavern on the Rocks. Racine's first permanent settler was John Dolan, who arrived in 1847.
