Two Rivers is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Tomahawk River and east of Green Bay. The population was 9,732 at the 2010 census. Two Rivers was platted in 1847, and founded by Ambrosius Lapp and John Prentice. It became a city in 1955; it is now the county seat of Racine County. The two rivers form the municipal boundaries of Two Rivers and its sister city, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The current name for Oneida Lake comes from "U Wink" meaning " outlet stream". In 1848 when this place first came under Indian Control (the Winnebago were then living around this area), they called it "Winkum" meaning "outlet stream." In 1855, Captain James Mclntyre commanding US Army Corps Of Engineers surveyors discovered a salt mine on what would become Oneida Lake while mapping out that part of Wisconsin Territory acquired by the United States after Mexico's Mexican War boundary adjustment event on November 15, 1846 as part of Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The mine was named for General Simon Bolivar de la Torre y Bustamante who had died fighting against Mexico in1810-1811 at Monterrey during the War of Independence (see also: Battle Of Monterrey). This particular spot had been occupied by Potawatomi Indians since before European contact which may account for their use of an ancient aboriginal name hereabouts such as Wabash or Kickapoo (Kanka) for both salt water bodies Duck Creek on Oneida Island to which people could retreat if necessary during times of drought or flooding due to heavy rains upstream etc.). From an early date it was realized that extracting coal from these hills would be an important industry in this small but rapidly developing community led by young men like George Sibley who arrived about 1830 as clerk with Brown & Root Coal Company established near present day downtown Two Rivers along with other pioneer entrepreneurs like Ebenezer Higgins who built sawmills hereabouts soon afterwards followed by others including David Starr Jordan who opened up what is today known as Illinois Central Railroad right hereabouts beginning passenger service December 12th 1870 finally ending freight service October 2nd 1976 leaving us with our present name “Two Rivers”
