Two Rivers is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,462 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the two forks of the Wabasha River that flow through it. The first settlers in Two Rivers were Dutch Reformed missionaries who arrived in the area in 1836. They built a small outpost on the east fork of the Wabasha River and called it "Wauwatosa". In 1838, they founded a larger settlement on the west fork of the Wabasha River and called it "Oneida". By 1840, both settlements had dwindled to just a few dozen people. But during Wisconsin's Mexican-American War (1846-48), Two Rivers came into contact with American forces and troops under General Philip Sheridan. After victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek, Sheridan ordered his men to burn down all of Oneida as punishment for their support of Mexico. In 1847, John Fetterman bought land on both forks of the Wabusha River and started to build what would become Two Rivers. Fetterman was an early settler who believed that transportation should be based on horseback rather than wagon wheels because horses could carry more goods than either vehicle or foot traffic could manage. He named his community after his two forks - Oneida for its location on East Fork; and Two Ridges for its location on West Fork - both names which still form part of town's namesake today. When Oneida began to decline in popularity after 1830 due to factors such as lack of water supply and disease outbreaks, many residents chose instead to move away from Oneida towards Two Ridges. However, by 1850, Bothiasburg had emerged as a much stronger community nearby with better water supplies and interest in staying there grew too strong for either Oneida or 2Ridges to keep upideme
